According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the shooting was reported at 3:53 p.m. in the area of Southwest 102nd Avenue and West Circle Plaza in the county’s unincorporated West Perrine area.

“According to investigators, the mother heard a loud popping sound from inside the residence and found her son suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his upper extremity,” MDSO officials said in a news release.

Detectives said the boy’s mother, Myeisha Sharie Smith, drove him to Jackson South Medical Center and he was then airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.

The boy is in stable condition, authorities said.

According to an arrest report obtained Wednesday by Local 10, Smith admitted to detectives that she left her gun unattended in her bedroom with her son, who then grabbed the gun and shot himself in the shoulder, just above the clavicle.

Smith was arrested on a charge of child neglect causing great bodily harm.

As of Wednesday morning, she was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. She is expected to appear in bond court later in the morning or afternoon.
