MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — A 23-year-old man faced 21 new charges on Monday after an alleged two-day crime spree in Miami-Dade County that included trying to kill an ex-girlfriend and firing a rifle at a detective, records show.
On Aug. 9, Karyne E. David fired into his ex-girlfriend’s home at 9:50 p.m. at Northwest 19 Avenue and 185th Terrace in Miami Gardens, according to a police officer’s arrest report.
On Aug. 10, David “shouldered” a rifle and pointed it at a Miami Gardens special victims unit detective, who then “discharged his duty pistol,” before a pursuit started, according to a police report.
David, who was armed with an AK-style Century Arms Draco with a wood and black finish, fled in a black Honda Accord, and during the high-speed pursuit, “put the rifle out of the window and began shooting back” at the detective, according to the police report.
The detective fired at David at Northwest 19th Avenue and 183rd Street, and again along Northwest 22nd Avenue, near 135th Street, according to the police officer’s report.
David “crashed into large bushes on the side of the road ... bailed out and fled eastbound on foot along a tree line” of Northwest 107th Street in Opa-locka, according to a police officer’s report.
Police officers reported running after David and catching up to him about a block away from the crash along 107th Street, near 17th Avenue, and detaining him before Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel arrived.
David also had a 30-round magazine loaded with nine live rounds and one round in the chamber, and he had an extra live round in his pocket, according to police.
MDFR personnel took David, who suffered a gunshot wound, to the North Shore Hospital, and he was transferred to the HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, where he attempted to escape on Aug. 10, according to police.
David was in the intensive care unit when he detached electrocardiogram leads from his chest to create a “sharp metal tool” that he inserted in the handcuff locking mechanism, according to a police report.
On Aug. 13, police officers arrested David after a doctor discharged him from the HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, records show.
Miami-Dade corrections booked David at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remained without bond on Monday afternoon.
Miami-Dade prosecutors filed two cases against David on Friday and two on Thursday, according to county court records.
