MIAMI — A trio from out-of-state is facing felony charges in South Florida after Miami police said they shot a scooter rider with BB guns in a drive-by in the city’s Brickell neighborhood early Monday morning.
According to the Miami Police Department, the incident happened at around 1:10 a.m. along Brickell Avenue, near Southeast Seventh Street.
MPD arrest reports state that as the victim rode the scooter north on Brickell Avenue, the trio drove beside him in a gray Mercedes-Benz SUV and the two rear passengers opened fire, striking him with multiple BB gun pellets, “including one pellet that struck him near his left eye, causing him to fall from his scooter.”
“While the victim was attempting to get back onto his feet, the vehicle made a turn and returned toward him, at which time the occupants again fired BB guns in his direction,” the report states. “The vehicle subsequently made another turn and left the area. During this occurrence, the victim was able to record video footage of the vehicle as it departed the scene.”
Police said they recovered three BB pellets at the scene and were able to make out a partial license plate, locating the vehicle about 20 minutes later along Southwest Second Avenue, near Eighth Street and pulling the group over.
Police identified the driver as Kai McMurray, 21, of Laguna Beach, California; and the passengers as Tomas Flecha, 19, of Conyers, Georgia; and Ayden Hanan, 23, of Gurnee, Illinois.
Officers said they found “multiple BB pellets on the vehicle’s floorboards, seats and cup holders.”
According to the reports, McMurray admitted that Flecha and Hanan “were actively rolling down the vehicle’s windows and shooting BB guns at people while he drove throughout the Brickell area.”
“(He) further stated that after shooting the BB guns in the area, the occupants returned to their apartment, where the BB guns were dropped off,” it states. “The occupants subsequently left the apartment again and continued driving around the area.”
Hanan, police said, admitted to being “aware of the BB gun shooting.”
Police took all three into custody on charges of aggravated battery and shooting or throwing a deadly missile. The latter charge was labeled as “attempted” for Hanan and McMurray.
The men were being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with bonds listed as “to be set” as of Monday afternoon.
