CUTLER BAY, Fla. — A man was arrested last Thursday in connection with a 2024 shooting near a Cutler Bay park that left two people injured and sent families attending a children’s baseball game scrambling for cover.
Brandon Vickers, 40, of Homestead, was identified by two witnesses as one of the shooters in the Oct. 21, 2024 incident, according to a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
Investigators said the shootout between neighbors and several people in a passing vehicle happened at approximately 7:45 p.m. in front of 20151 SW 89th Ave., near Franjo Park.
According to the arrest report, Vickers and several other people arrived in two stolen vehicles with unassigned license plates and began firing multiple times toward the victims.
One victim was struck in the right thigh and another was shot in the right ankle, authorities said. Both were transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to Jackson South Medical Center.
Investigators said two witnesses identified Vickers as a shooter. The witnesses also recorded video of the vehicle Vickers was allegedly in as it fled the area.
The arrest report also states that Vickers had previously been involved in gang-related shootings connected to people with whom the victims were associated.
At the time of the shooting, residents told Local 10 News that a group of people had been having dinner outside shortly before 8 p.m. when the shooting occurred.
A children’s baseball game was also underway at nearby Franjo Park when gunfire erupted, sending families rushing to take cover.
Mickey Lopez, the head coach of one of the teams on the field, described the scene as “total chaos.”
“I don’t know how we ended up behind home plate, but that’s where we hunkered down with the kids — we threw our bodies over them,” Lopez said.
Authorities later found the two shooting victims at a nearby gas station, but said they refused to cooperate with the investigation.
A vehicle belonging to resident Jose Madrid was also struck by more than a dozen bullets.
“I could have lost my life there because look — 18 shots hit that car,” Madrid said.
According to the arrest report, investigators determined that Vickers had previous felony convictions dating to May 2017 for dealing in stolen property, providing false information to a pawn broker and possession of a controlled substance.
He now faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
As of Monday morning, Vickers was being held at the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center.
The search continues for others involved in the shooting.
