POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — A 56-year-old woman is accused of exploiting an elderly man and misappropriating approximately $345,000 of his assets, including proceeds from the sale of his Pompano Beach home, which she did not have permission to sell in the first place, according to a Broward Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
Joy Yvette Holder, of Tamarac, was arrested Thursday on charges of exploitation of an elderly person involving $100,000 or more and criminal intent to solicit or conspire.
Investigators allege Holder obtained power of attorney for the victim despite knowing that he lacked the capacity to consent to that.
According to the arrest report, Holder then unlawfully sold the victim’s home on South Cypress Road in Pompano Beach.
On Sept. 29, 2022, a title and escrow company wired approximately $319,000 from a JPMorgan Chase account into a beneficiary account that was in the names of both the victim and Holder, authorities said.
The Citibank account was later discovered during civil court proceedings, according to the arrest report.
Investigators allege Joy Holder and Ray Holder used the money for their personal benefit, with Joy Holder laundering funds through payments to her cleaning business, Joy’s Cleaning.
Investigators identify alleged co-conspirators
According to the arrest report, investigators consider Ray Holder a co-conspirator because of his access to and use of the funds.
Investigators also identified Reannah Ashlyn Mariah Holder as an alleged co-conspirator, accusing her of interfering with efforts by court personnel, Florida Department of Children and Families investigators and law enforcement.
According to the arrest report, Ray and Reannah Holder allegedly interfered with a DCF welfare check involving the victim on July 19, 2023.
Investigators said a DCF investigator had previously told them she planned to conduct the welfare check that day.
Ray and Reannah Holder then allegedly attempted to drive the victim to Orlando under the pretext that he was going to see his “sister,” according to the report.
Investigators said the victim also owned a 2017 Nissan Maxima that he had purchased for more than $31,000. But investigators allege Ray Holder had the victim sign a bill of sale, transferring the vehicle to him.
While Joy Holder was taken into custody Thursday, online jail records do not show that Ray Holder or Reannah Ashlyn Mariah Holder have been taken into custody, as of Friday morning.
Joy Holder, meanwhile, was being held at the Broward County Main Jail and is expected to appear in bond court sometime Friday.
