Funeral held for Miami police officer fatally shot

Carl Patrick to be laid to rest Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - A visitation was held Friday for a Miami police officer who was shot to death at his Pembroke Pines home.

Carl Patrick was laid to rest Saturday as an officer killed in the line of duty.

Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa told Local 10 his department intends to hold a fallen officer's funeral for Patrick.

The 25-year veteran was found dead in his police uniform last Friday.

Patrick's colleagues came to Miami Shores Christian Church to pay their respects Friday night.

Pembroke Pines police are still investigating the shooting, but Patrick's live-in girlfriend, Teniko Thompson, is considered a person of interest.

Thompson's attorney, Rod Vereen, told reporters earlier this week that his client acted in self-defense. He claimed the gun fired during a struggle, but Thompson didn't pull the trigger.

Vereen also said Patrick had been abusing Thompson, a Miami public service aide, for years. He provided Local 10 with photographs of an abused Thompson he said came at the hands of Patrick.

Patrick's funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Church in Miami.
