Five Sons Supermarket catches fire Thursday in Miami

Cause of fire under investigation

MIAMI – It took firefighters about 40 minutes to put out the flames at a fully engulfed supermarket in Miami Thursday afternoon.

Sky 10 was over the scene just after 2 p.m. Thursday. Smoke could be seen coming out of the roof and every window of Five Sons Supermarket at Northwest 69th Terrace and 15th Avenue.

According to Miami Fire Rescue officials, the fire started at about 1:45 p.m. and quickly spread to the attic, causing the roof to collapse. The owners of the supermarket were inside the business at the time and told firefighters that they heard a loud noise before they saw smoke.

"We ain't got nothing now," said Akia Starks, whose family owns the supermarket. "Our stuff is just gone, demolished, nothing. It's just me and my great-grandma, and we are just trying to make it."

Starks said her family has owned the supermarket for the past three decades.

Investigators said they aren't sure exactly what caused the fire, but said it may have been some sort of electrical malfunction.
