Woman helps teenage Overtown shooting victim

Teen recovering from gunshot to leg

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Community advocate Renita Holmes is being hailed a hero after she a helped a teen who was shot in the Overtown neighborhood on Saturday.

Holmes had just stop at an Overtown corner store at Northwest 5th Avenue and Northwest 7th Street when bullets went flying.

Several of those bullets shattered windows in her car.

"I noticed that something was behind me and then the second shot came," Holmes said.

At least 12 bullet holes were clearly observed at the scene.

Holmes was not hurt but 17-year-old Jedadiah Scataliffe was hit in the leg, police said.

"I saw this young man tipping over to the sidewalk," Holmes said. "I wasn't going to leave him."

Holmes called 911 and stayed with the teen throughout the night.

"I'm a bit stressed out," Holmes said. "I'm still hearing the ringing in my ears from the shots fired."

The teen is expected to survive.
