DORAL, Fla. — Shelter dogs in Miami got a chance to stretch their legs and connect with the community during a first-of-its-kind wag and walk 5K organized by University of Miami students.
Dozens of dogs took part in the event in Doral, and by the end of the morning, many were worn out, lying down and catching their breath after hours of activity. The walk was designed to give the animals a break from the shelter while helping them bond with people.
Video from the finish shows just how much fun they had — with several dogs ready to nap right on the street after crossing the finish line.
The dogs were walked by University of Miami students and community members, all volunteering their time. The event was started this year by a student who wanted to do more to help shelter animals.
“I’ve always loved dogs — that’s always been my passion,” said Amanda Galante, president of UM Canes for Canines. “I want to have a dog ranch and hold all shelter dogs, but I foster from Miami. I fell in love with it and decided I wanted to do something more.”
Students who participated said the experience helped break stereotypes about shelter dogs.
“I’m sure they’re going to find someone,” said Ava Miss, a UM student who walked one of the dogs. “I think this is a really great way for people to see that shelter dogs are not scary entities, they’re really loving creatures.”
Miami-Dade County Animal Services Director Annette Jose said the department fully supported the idea from the start.
“We couldn’t be prouder to have Amanda create this Canes for Canines club,” Jose said. “It was her idea. She reached out, and we said of course.”
Organizers say the event has already raised money and hope it will lead to more adoptions and foster placements. The goal is to continue connecting people with shelter dogs — especially students — in hopes more animals will find homes.
