Hurricanes linebacker Marques Gayot leaving team

Departure becomes fourth for Hurricanes since Mark Richt took over at Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – For the second time in as many days, a University of Miami football player is quitting the team.

Miami junior linebacker Marques Gayot said he is leaving the program to pursue other opportunities, team spokesman Tom Symonds said Thursday.

Gayot played in three games for the Hurricanes last season, amassing seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He missed the final 10 games of 2015 after suffering a season-ending injury during practice.

The news comes a day after tight end Jerome Washington said he was leaving the team.

Gayot is the fourth Miami player to leave the team since Mark Richt was hired as head coach in December.

The former Palm Beach Post defensive player of the year from Lake Worth collided with another player during a practice in September and injured his neck. He was flown to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center as a precaution.
