MIAMI — Four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson is expected to join the Miami Heat after reaching a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks, multiple reports confirmed on Friday.
Thompson will need to clear waivers before he can officially sign with Miami.
Thompson, 36, was owed $17.5 million for the 2026-27 season. The Mavericks had been looking for a trade involving the veteran guard, but the two sides ultimately agreed to end his contract through a buyout.
The move would bring the sharpshooter to Miami after two seasons in Dallas.
During his time with the Mavericks, he appeared in 141 games, including 80 starts, and averaged 12.9 points per game while shooting 38.7% from three-point range.
Thompson entered the NBA in 2011 after the Golden State Warriors selected him 11th overall. He spent 13 seasons with Golden State, winning four NBA championships and earning five All-Star selections.
It’s been an eventful offseason for the Miami Heat who previously added Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, along with Tim Hardaway Jr., to team with center Bam Adebayo.
The majority of Miami’s games this season, at least 68, will be airing on Local 10 News.
