MIAMI – New Miami Marlins co-owner Derek Jeter is turning to his former team for help in the infield and bullpen.
The Marlins acquired left-handed pitcher Caleb Smith and infielder Garrett Cooper from the Yankees in exchange for minor league pitcher Michael King, plus international signing bonus pool money.
Smith, 26, spent a majority of the 2017 season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He was 9-1 with a 2.39 ERA in 18 appearances, striking out 97 batters against 28 walks and holding opponents to a .209 batting average.
His major league debut with the Yankees came on July 17 at Minnesota, when he pitched three innings and struck out five in a relief role. He was 0-1 in nine games -- two of them starts -- overall.
Cooper, 26, began the season in the minors with the Milwaukee Brewers before a July 13 trade to the Yankees. He made his Major League Baseball debut July 14 at Boston.
In 13 games for the Yankees, Cooper batted .326, recording five doubles, a triple and six RBI. He had a four-hit game Aug. 9 at Toronto.
Smith and Cooper were added to the 40-man roster.
