WEATHER ALERT

A flood advisory and a special weather statement in effect for 7 regions in the area

DETROIT ZOO

Exactly how I’d spend 24 hours in Metro Detroit

I love Detroit. As someone who no longer has the pleasure of living in the area, people are sometimes surprised to hear that -- how much I love the region, that is; but it’s one of those “IYKYK” things. Anyone who has spent substantial time in the Detroit area knows, this area is such a gem.

Advocates: Nations must move faster to protect biodiversity

Environmentalists are faulting slow progress at a U.N.-backed meeting of nearly all the world’s countries toward beefing up protections for biodiversity on Earth.

Detroit Zoo plans to be powered by renewable energy by 2021

Detroit Zoo plans to be powered by renewable energy by 2021

DETROIT (CNN) - Windmills and solar panels may soon be keeping the lights on in the reptile house, and throughout the Detroit Zoo. The zoo, located in Detroit's suburb of Royal Oak, says it's shifting to being powered entirely by renewable energy. "We are announcing today that Detroit Zoo is going to be 100% fully powered by local Michigan-made energy," Scott Carter, the zoo's chief life sciences officer, said in a web video posted by DTE Energy. The zoo is joining MIGreenPower, which is DTE's program allowing its customers to receive energy from the utility company's renewable sources. The Detroit Zoo says that program is the first of its kind at a zoo.
