Moderates like Sen. Joe Manchin “have to do away with the filibuster in order to get any work done,” Dr. Cornel West said, due to “a right-wing party that’s authoritarian.” Dr. Cornel West believes Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin must support the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, the noted Black intellectual maintaining that Manchin needs to recognize Senate Republicans will never support legislation for voter rights with a colorful description. “Okay, what do you think?” Don Lemon asked West Thursday on his eponymous CNN show after showing Manchin in an earlier clip, the pair in discussion about President Joe Biden‘s effort to support Democrats’ legislative efforts.news.yahoo.com
Photo of Chauvin juror wearing "BLM" shirt raises questions about potential appeal
A photo of one of the jurors who convicted former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has raised questions about his impartiality during the trial, and about whether the verdict could be overturned in an appeal. Why it matters: 31-year-old juror Brandon Mitchell said he answered "no" to questions in a juror questionnaire about whether he attended demonstrations or marches in Minneapolis after Floyd's death, and about protests against police brutality. He is also wearing a hat that says "Black Lives Matter."Defense attorney Mike Padden told the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune it is "disconcerting" that Mitchell did not divulge his participation in the march, adding that he may have been removed from the jury pool had he done so. What he's saying: "I think I was being extremely honest, for sure," Mitchell told the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune about attending the event, which he characterized as a voter registration rally. "I gave my views on everything — on the case, on Black Lives Matter.""I'd never been to [Washington] D.C.," Mitchell added. "The opportunity to go to D.C., the opportunity to be around thousands and thousands of Black people; I just thought it was a good opportunity to be a part of something."Mitchell said the picture was posted by his uncle, and that he doesn't remember wearing or owning the shirt. He said the event was "100 percent not" a march for Floyd.More from Axios: Sign up to get the latest market trends with Axios Markets. Subscribe for freenews.yahoo.com
Trump the dancer? His moves to 'YMCA' at rallies are a hit
President Donald Trump, a man who is famously particular about his appearance, is fully embracing doing a dad dance to the Village People's “YMCA” as the finale to his rallies in the campaign's closing stretch. Trump's rally dance has become a rare moment of levity in an otherwise miserable campaign year marked by a deadly pandemic, an economic recession and racial turmoil. Then order 'Dancing with The Don’ and let President Trump teach you all the hottest moves!" Dancing.”“YMCA,” widely considered a gay anthem, is a relatively new addition to Trump's rally playlist. Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller agreed to reveal the secret to an AP reporter “only if we first get a clip of you singing YMCA.”AP's Jill Colvin declined.
What Eliminating The Electoral College Would Mean For African Americans
Massachusetts Democrat Sen. Elizabeth War-ren, a 2020 presidential candidate, last year endorsed ending the electoral college during a town hall meeting at Jackson State University, a historically Black college in Mississippi. And that means get rid of the electoral college, and everybody counts. The electoral college is made up of 538 electors who technically cast votes to decide the president and vice president. Electors are apportioned to states based on their population, meaning that larger states have more electoral votes than smaller states. By contrast, California has the most electoral votes (55), but each elector represents every 711,000 residents.thewestsidegazette.com
Costas joins CNN to talk on intersection of news and sports
NEW YORK Time to cut a conversation with Bob Costas short. The new boss CNN chief Jeff Zucker is calling on the other line. Costas, who ended his 40-year hitch at NBC Sports more than a year ago, this week signed on as a CNN contributor to offer commentary on the intersection of news and sports. My relationship with Jeff makes me comfortable with the whole arrangement, Costas said. But Costas has the hardest time justifying college football, a sport with constant contact, resuming when student attendance in general will be restricted at many schools.
Hot news cycle leads CNN to best ratings in 40 years
The others in this space are political talk channels, and so even when they're talking about these stories, they're talking about the politics of the stories. CNN has its share of political talk, especially on its increasingly opinionated prime-time lineup of Anderson Cooper, Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon. During the breaking stories, CNN responded by assigning more of its top people, like Wolf Blitzer, to weekend work. It has simulcast the CNN International network overnight in the U.S., Zucker said. The ratings of the past three months proved those viewers still return to CNN when there is important news, he said.
Some New York news shows back, but many hosts work remotely
Monday represented a key phase in New York City's reopening, with many offices bringing employees back for the first time. Despite the CBS and Fox moves, most news employees continue to work remotely, and the television programs that originate here have a patchwork of approaches that have quickly become familiar. A majority of the show hosts on MSNBC including Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski and Willie Geist of Morning Joe work remotely. Other morning shows have varied approaches. Hoda Kotb of NBC's Today show has worked out of that show's Rockefeller Center studio, but most of her colleagues are at home.

(AP Photo/Patrick Semansky)NEW YORK It was a split screen for the ages on MSNBC Monday: on the left side, President Donald Trump talking about restoring law and order. The president seems to think that dominating black people, dominating peaceful protesters, is law and order, CNN's Anderson Cooper said. Trump has the full authority to use the federal government to go into states to restore order, Fox's Sean Hannity said. Criminals and domestic terrorists are using George Floyd to try to murder America, host Laura Ingraham said.
Former Fox, NBC star Kelly interviews Biden accuser
NEW YORK – The former aide who has accused Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden of sexual assault has been interviewed by Megyn Kelly, the one-time Fox News and NBC journalist who's accustomed to a harsh media glare. Tara Reade had been expected to give a television interview since Biden went on MSNBC's “Morning Joe” last week to forcefully deny her accusations from 27 years ago. In Kelly, Reade turned to a television star without a television network. “I know what it's like to be at the center of a media storm,” Kelly said. Kelly also accused the late Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes of sexual harassment when she worked at the network; her allegations helped lead to his ouster.
