cbsnews.com‘White supremacy was on full display.’ Double standard seen in police response to riot at Capitol
(Jason Armond / Los Angeles Times)Michelle Obama highlighted the double standard of policing seen at the Capitol compared with how police officers responded at largely peaceful Black Lives Matter protests. “The law enforcement in the nation’s capital is attuned to big events and demonstrations. They collaborate every four years to create a safe environment for the new president,” said Lynda Williams, president of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives. Federal law enforcement and National Guard troops were dispatched across the city for days as the city went under curfew. “The National Guard should have been in D.C. instead.”“If white America didn’t understand their privilege, they saw it yesterday,” he said.
latimes.comBiden's attorney general search is focused on Jones, Garland
WASHINGTON – Alabama Sen. Doug Jones and federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland are emerging as the leading contenders to be nominated as President-elect Joe Biden’s attorney general, three people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. Biden's thinking was described by people with knowledge of the presidential transition's internal thinking who were not authorized to speak publicly. Jones, who is white, has had a long-standing personal relationship with Biden dating back to Biden’s first presidential campaign in 1988. Jones would not comment Tuesday on the possibility of a nomination as attorney general. The Biden team has also been considering a number of other potential candidates for the post, including former Justice Department official Lisa Monaco.
Biden makes pitch for retired general to be Pentagon chief
Biden countered the concerns by arguing that Austin knows that a Pentagon chief's duties are different from those of a military officer. But the requirement for a congressional waiver makes getting him installed as Pentagon chief more complicated than usual. Austin retired in 2016 after 41 years in the Army and has never held a political position. Some prominent Democrats opposed the Mattis waiver, and among those who voted for it, Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island expressed doubts. Biden has known Austin at least since the general's years leading U.S. and coalition troops in Iraq while Biden was vice president.
AP sources: Biden picks Lloyd Austin as secretary of defense
WASHINGTON – President-elect Joe Biden will nominate retired four-star Army general Lloyd J. Austin to be secretary of defense, according to four people familiar with the decision. Biden selected Austin over the longtime front-runner candidate, Michele Flournoy, a former senior Pentagon official and Biden supporter who would have been the first woman to serve as defense secretary. Biden also had considered Jeh Johnson, a former Pentagon general counsel and former secretary of homeland defense. Like Mattis, Austin would need to obtain a congressional waiver to serve as defense secretary. When Austin retired in 2016, Obama praised his “character and competence,” as well as his judgment and leadership.
Biden facing growing pressure over secretary of defense pick
WASHINGTON – President-elect Joe Biden is facing escalating pressure from competing factions within his own party as he finalizes his choice for secretary of defense. And facing massive governing challenges once he takes office on Jan. 20, Biden can perhaps least afford to lose the backing of the Democratic Party’s fiery progressive base. Nearly 100 House Democrats belong to the Progressive Caucus, which may wield significant influence over Biden's policy agenda as Democrats cling to their narrowest House majority in a century. Flournoy, meanwhile, had been seen as the leading candidate for defense secretary under a Democratic president since Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 campaign. Biden has promised both to fight for big, bold policy changes and to compromise with Republicans.

Biden likely to break barriers, pick woman to lead Pentagon
Flournoy, a politically moderate Pentagon veteran, is regarded by U.S. officials and political insiders as a top choice for President-elect Joe Bide to choose to head the Pentagon. Michele Flournoy, a politically moderate Pentagon veteran, is regarded by U.S. officials and political insiders as a top choice for the position. If confirmed, Flournoy would face a future that is expected to involve shrinking Pentagon budgets and potential military involvement in the distribution of a coronavirus vaccine. She has been outspoken on American foreign and defense policy, particularly over the past year. The Defense Department is one of three Cabinet agencies — the others being Treasury and Veterans Affairs — that have never been led by a woman.
DACA timeline: The rise and resilience of the Dreamers program
Here are key developments that led to the Supreme Court case that will decide whether President Trump was justified in seeking to end the Obama-era program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. Under the new program, Homeland Security said it would defer deportation action against qualified individuals for a period of two years, subject to renewal. During that time, individuals would be permitted to work legally. The 5th Circuit Court by a 2-1 vote affirmed the judges order in November, and the Supreme Court did the same based on a 4-4 vote in June 2016. Gen. Jeff Sessions, who asserted this open-ended circumvention of immigration laws was an unconstitutional exercise of authority by the Executive Branch. She also cited the rulings by the 5th Circuit and the Supreme Court. January 2018 U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco issued a nationwide order blocking the Trump administrations repeal of DACA.
