Brazilian senators are discussing details of an investigative committee's final report that will call for President Jair Bolsonaro to be indicted on criminal charges for bungling the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and producing the world’s second-highest death toll.

(AP Photo/Andrew Medichini, File)SAO PAULO – A top judge has thrown out both corruption convictions of former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, opening the way for a possible battle against conservative incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in next year’s elections. Bolsonaro quickly responded to the court ruling, calling the administration of da Silva's Workers' Party “catastrophic. AdAs news of the ruling broke, chants of “Lula livre!” — “Lula free!” — and recordings of jingles from his presidential campaigns echoed from windows in some cities. “Fachin knows that his decision basically means Lula will not be punished, but he wants to save whatever is left of Car Wash,” Badaró said.
More Liverpool misery: 1st home loss to Everton in 22 years
Everton's Richarlison, second left celebrates with teammates after scoring the opening goal of the game during the English Premier League soccer match between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield in Liverpool, England, Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021. The worst form since 1923 for Liverpool after a fourth straight home loss. Even worse for Liverpool was losing yet another center back option as Jordan Henderson was forced off injured in the first half. Pickford dived at the feet of striker Mohamed Salah as Liverpool turned up the pressure without really laying siege to the Everton goal. While Southampton ended a six-game losing run in the league, the point stopped Chelsea recording a sixth straight win in all competitions.
Bolsonaro allies win in Congress and slow impeachment drive
Any impeachment move would have to start in the lower house, where outgoing Speaker Rodrigo Maia has been a critic of the president though also rejecting calls for an impeachment effort. Maia’s candidate to be his successor, Luiz Felipe Baleia Rossi, got 145 votes in the lower house dispute while Lira got 302. Neither Lira nor Pacheco mentioned Bolsonaro in their victory speeches, and both promised to lead an independent legislature. “Bolsonaro has won, but it is not clear whether he will get unconditional support,” Rey said. Analysts linked the amounts to the congressional leadership elections, a move typical of Brazilian presidents that Bolsonaro had promised to end.
Brazil’s health agency approves the use of two vaccines
Brazil currently has 6 million doses of Sinovac’s CoronaVac vaccine ready to distribute in the next few days and is awaiting the arrival of 2 million doses of the vaccine made by AstraZeneca and partner Oxford University. “This is good news for Brazil, but 6 million doses are still very few. Sao Paulo state started immunization Sunday after Anvisa’s decision. The Sao Paulo government had generated mistrust with a confusing announcement about the results of the CoronaVac vaccine. The government’s projection is to end 2021 with at least 354 million doses between contracts for the two vaccines, and those that will be produced locally.
Brazil has surge of virus cases, downplayed by politicians
But even accounting for the statistical anomaly, experts warn last week’s surge shouldn't be ignored, particularly as the number of cases confirmed this week has remained elevated. But Sao Paulo city Mayor Bruno Covas argued that despite the greater intensive-care occupancy, overall cases and deaths have been relatively stable. In Brazil — much like in the U.S. — the virus has been politicized by the president, Jair Bolsonaro, who has routinely downplayed COVID-19 and undermined local authorities’ restrictions on activity. Paulo Lotufo, an epidemiologist and professor of internal medicine at the University of Sao Paulo, said that the increase in Brazilian cases is undeniable. ″Sao Paulo's capital, Sao Paulo's interior, Brazil's southern region, Rio de Janeiro; super-spreader events explain spikes in specific hospitals, but what you see now is generalized.”___ Savarese reported from Sao Paulo.
Crisis averted as Man United and Solskjaer come out fighting
After his team’s stirring comeback in a 3-1 win at Everton in the Premier League, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer didn’t hold back, either. Edinson Cavani capped the fightback with his first goal for United deep in stoppage time. ZIYECH STARSLike United, Chelsea also fought back from conceding an early goal and ultimately swept aside Sheffield United in a 4-1 win. And like United, Chelsea had a creative playmaker pulling the strings as the catalyst for the recovery. “We played against him in the Champions League last year,” Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said of Ziyech.
Van Dijk injury causes concern for frustrated Liverpool
Early in what proved to be a painful Merseyside derby for Liverpool, Van Dijk was the subject of a reckless lunge by Jordan Pickford that saw the Everton goalkeeper clatter into the extended right leg of the Netherlands defender. Van Dijk roared in agony and, tellingly, stayed down. There was no official word from Liverpool on the potential length of his absence, but Van Dijk reportedly left hospital on crutches in the evening. Van Dijk might have been marking Keane and Calvert-Lewin for both of those Everton chances. For Southampton’s second goal, Kurt Zouma underhit a back pass before goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made two errors in a matter of seconds to allow Che Adams to score.
Son nets 4 as Spurs triumph; Mane double in Liverpool win
Heung-min Son was rampant, scoring four in a league game for a first time — all assisted by Harry Kane, who got Tottenham's fifth. Sadio Mane took advantage, grabbing two goals in five minutes to give Liverpool a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge. Two minutes into the second half, Kane played in Son again as Tottenham went in front. The South Korean secured his first Premier League hat trick in the 64th minute after being set up by Kane’s lofted pass. Kane became the first player to set up a Premier League teammate for four goals, crossing for Son to chip goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.
Sao Paulo cemeteries to dig up graves for coronavirus space
A cemetery worker exhumes the body of a person buried three years ago at the Vila Formosa cemetery, which does not charge families for the gravesites, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Friday, June 12, 2020. Sao Paulo is one of the COVID-19 hot spots in Latin America's hardest-hit nation, with 5,480 deaths as of Thursday in the city of 12 million people. Clearly the health system in Brazil across the country needs significant support in order to sustain its effort in this regard. At Sao Paulos biggest cemetery, Vila Formosa, Adenilson Costa was among workers in blue protective suits digging up old graves Friday. Before the pandemic, Costa said, he and colleagues would exhume remains of about 40 coffins per day if families stopped paying required fees for the plots.
Sfiha's House Brings Arab-Brazilian Snacks to North Miami
Miami has long touted its connection to Brazil, but it's hard to see in the food. Yet there's always been a sneaking suspicion and reality that Brazilian food is much more. Brazil today is a mashup of many cultures. Luckily, over the summer, Thiago and Elena Gamoeda opened the aptly named Sfiha's House, specializing in their homeland's ubiquitous Arab-Brazilian snacks, alongside some more of Brazil's familiar grab-and-go bites. "The challenge that arose was how to make the flour taste and bake like Brazilian flour to make a light and slightly sweet dough," Thiago says.miaminewtimes.com
