KENDALL, Fla. – Miami-Dade Police are putting safety measures into place with a crime initiative that they announced Friday, but it wasn’t just law enforcement that appeared at the press conference at Dadeland Mall. Newly elected County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava began the conference stressing the importance of safety approaching the Thanksgiving holiday. Then it was time for the Miami-Dade police to talk about crime prevention and what they are planning on doing to deter spikes in crime that happen around the holidays. “During this initiative, uniformed and undercover officers will conduct surveillance at high visibility patrol’s throughout our community,” Freddy Ramirez, director of Miami-Dade Police Department, said. We will be out here working together to assure that does not happen,” Ramirez said.

Meanwhile, Johns Hopkins University of Medicine’s Coronavirus Resource Center lists Miami-Dade second in its Top 50 Confirmed Cases list by County in the United States. Miami-Dade at 163,375 confirmed cases as of Sept. 11 is second just under Los Angeles with 252,066 cases. Broward County is eighth in the country with 74,084 confirmed cases tabulated by the Resource Center as of Sept. 11. The new deaths reported over the past 24 hours include 46 in Miami-Dade County, 3 in Broward and 4 in Palm Beach County. MIAMI Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced on Friday that he vetoed the commissioners push for a citizens independent review panel on Miami-Dade Police Department officers. 20-65 that would establish an Independent Review Panel (IRP) with subpoena power. I also vetoed an amendment to the Countys Home Rule Charter to put before the voters the same proposal that includes the subpoena provision. I am proud of the work the Miami-Dade Police Department is doing to continue to build the public trust, every day. I urge commissioners to approve Commissioner Jordans much-improved IRP proposal that prohibits County employees and elected officials from being subpoenaed.
