The weekend crash between a train and an SUV that killed six people in Florida happened at a private road crossing where little more than a sign or two is required. There were no crossing gates, no flashing lights and no sound.
City of Miramar starts construction on new Park and Ride Lot
MIRAMAR, Fla. – The City of Miramar has announced construction plans for a new Park and Ride lot along east Hiatus Road, between Pembroke Road and Miramar Boulevard. The facility would support the I-95 Express service to Downtown Miami and Brickell. It will accommodate more than 440 cars and will include electric charging stations for 20 cars. It will also have the capability to charge electric buses. The new Miramar Park and Ride lot will also include 911 cell towers and security cameras for enhanced safety.
Brightline drops Virgin as partner for Florida passenger train service
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The partnership between Richard Bransons Virgin Group and the private Florida passenger train service Brightline is over. Brightline announced the split in a monthly report and said it would halt its plans to rebrand as Virgin Trains USA. Brightline declined comment Monday on the split. Virgin did not respond to an email. Its Virgin Atlantic airline filed for bankruptcy last week.
Driver assistance technology shouldnt be fully trusted, AAA says
Active driving assistance systems may lull drivers into a false sense of security, allowing them to direct their attention away from driving, AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said. When using these systems, its critical that drivers remain focused on the road, in case you need to intervene. AAA concluded that adaptive cruise control functions performed well. But the vehicles experienced some other type of issue every 8 miles, on average, researchers said. AAA is calling on car companies to do further research on the automated systems before releasing them to market.
