Garbage truck crashes off elevated highway, lands in Jose Marti Park

Truck crashes through guardrail on I-95 exit ramp in Miami

MIAMI – A garbage truck fell off an elevated highway and landed in a Miami park late Monday afternoon.

The truck crashed through the guardrail on the Seventh Street exit ramp from southbound Interstate 95 and landed in the parking lot of Jose Marti Park.

Sky 10 was above the crash scene. Debris could be seen strewn about the park.

Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said the truck fell more than 100 feet to the ground.

The driver was ejected and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in serious condition. He was later identified as Kaseem Smith.

"If he does survive, and I pray that he does, he was born today," Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Joe Sanchez said.

Jose Marti Park was open at the time, but no other injuries were reported.

Two vehicles in the parking lot were damaged.

The exit ramp was expected to remain closed until emergency repairs could be made to the guardrail.
