Florida has passed 20,000 resident deaths associated with COVID-19. The news came Monday as the first vaccines in the state were being administered to frontline healthcare professionals.

Also Monday, national coronavirus-related deaths passed 300,000.

The Florida Department of Health reported 8,452 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday along with 137 additional resident deaths.

The state is now up to 1,134,383 total coronavirus cases of and 20,003 resident deaths, according to the health department.

Florida has also reported that at least 268 non-resident deaths have occurred here, and there have been at least 58,269 hospitalizations attributed to the novel coronavirus in the state since the start of the outbreak.

The statewide positivity rate from yesterday’s testing was 8.34%.

Deaths confirmed in the past day include 21 in Miami-Dade County, six in Broward County and six in Palm Beach County.

The first vaccine shots in the state were given to hospital workers at a few locations Monday, including some employees from Memorial Regional in Broward. Jackson Memorial in Miami-Dade is expected to start receiving doses Tuesday.

Worldwide, the number of COVID-19 cases reported is more than 72.5 million. There have been more than 1.6 million deaths worldwide attributed to the pandemic, according to data compiled from various sources by Johns Hopkins University.

The United States has passed 16.3 million confirmed cases, with more than 300,000 deaths from COVID-19, the highest totals in the world.
