MIAMI – A propane tank exploded while firefighters worked on Sunday at a single-story residential duplex in Miami’s Flagami neighborhood.

The fire displaced eight people. City of Miami Department of Fire-Rescue responded to a call for help shortly after 7:30 a.m., near the corner of Northwest Fifth Street and 43rd Place.

The firefighters who arrived found heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the property and requested help from colleagues, according to Lt. Pete Sanchez, a spokesman for the department.

“Firefighters extended hose lines to the rear of the property to make a quick-fire attack,” Sanchez wrote in a statement.

The exterior fire had extended into the home and several propane tanks caught on fire.

The fire also extended next door to a shed, but firefighters kept it from spreading to the neighboring house.

“As they extinguished the fire, one tank exploded but no one was injured,” Sanchez wrote.

It took about 30 minutes for firefighters to control the fire, according to Sanchez, who added investigators were working to determine the cause.
