MIAMI — A 9-year-old boy is continuing a difficult recovery after being attacked by several dogs on a beach in Bimini last week, his family told Local 10 News on Tuesday.
Beau’s mother, Aliette Trelles, said her son is making progress after suffering severe injuries in the attack.
“He’s doing well. He’s strong. He’s a fighter,” Trelles said. “He’s blowing people away with his ability to recover.”
Beau was staying with family and close friends at a home in Bimini Cove when, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, he stepped outside shortly before 10:30 a.m. on July 28 to collect sand.
His mother, Aliette Trelles, said Beau had a simple mission that morning.
“The night before we were catching hermit crabs, and his mission that morning was to get sand for the crabs,” she said.
Trelles said Beau was suddenly attacked by several large dogs but was able to run back inside.
“All he kept repeating was dogs, dogs, dogs, dogs,” she added. “He was speaking like he was going to die, speaking to God and saying, ‘I don’t wanna die this way.’ And me looking at him, holding him, inspecting all these wounds, going, ‘Is this the moment I lose my son?’”
The attack left Beau with severe injuries to his limbs, face and neck, including the loss of a portion of his scalp. His mother said the top portion of his head had to be treated with a special sealed wrap to help with healing.
“His entire crown of his head was removed,” Trelles said.
Beau was flown by the U.S. Coast Guard to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in Miami-Dade County for emergency treatment. His father, Michael Brattain, said Beau remained awake during the flight.
“He was awake the entire time. My goal was to keep him awake. ‘Beau look at me keep your eyes open,’” said Brattain.
Beau has undergone three surgeries so far, with his family expecting a long recovery involving additional procedures and therapy. Friends and family are raising money to help cover the cost of his care, which Trelles estimated could reach millions of dollars.
“Upwards of 2, 3, even $4 million, depending on reconstruction and therapy needs,” she said.
Beau’s parents are now sharing his story to raise awareness and encourage action to prevent similar attacks.
“An island that held so much joy and memory for me is a place I don’t want to go again. I don’t want anyone to go back to again until they get their stuff together,” Trelles said.
Local 10 is working to get more confirmed information directly from the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Media reports out of Bimini have indicated there were previous concerns about stray dogs in the area before the attack, and the owner of those dogs is reportedly cooperating with authorities.
Both of Beau’s parents have retained legal counsel as the investigation continues.
