Tropical development is unlikely this week, but watching off the Southeast coast to be sure
The tropics have gone amazingly quiet. The large area of disturbed weather extending from the Caribbean across the southern Bahamas into the Atlantic is being caused by a weak, elongated low-pressure system enhanced by a dip in the jet steam.

Category 4 Hurricane Sam is turning to the north well away from the islands
Hurricane Sam is a classic, super-intense hurricane. Thankfully, it will clearly turn north well away from the Caribbean islands and well east of Florida and the Bahamas. Bermuda will have to watch it as the storm approaches that island toward the end of the week.

New systems are trying to develop on both sides of the Atlantic
The disturbance we have been watching east of the Bahamas is getting slightly more organized. Tropical Disturbance #1 has a decent chance to eventually become a named storm, but it’s in a competition with Tropical Disturbance #2 on the other side of the Atlantic to see which one gets named first.

Coronavirus pandemic has slowed Bahamas recovery efforts following destruction of Hurricane Dorian
PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – As the Bahamas continue to recover one year after Hurricane Dorian slammed the Abaco Islands, they are being met with another challenge. When COVID-19 forced the Bahamas to shut down, it slowed down the rebuilding efforts, but also left many without jobs. Just as businesses reopened, they were shut down as the Bahamas issued some of the strictest lockdown measures. The Bahamas currently has just over 2000 active COVID-19 cases and a recent surge forced even tougher lockdown measures to contain the spread. She’s been focused on economic relief and helping businesses to reopen, which now with the novel coronavirus, forced all businesses to restructure.

Bahamas marks anniversary of historic tragedy: Hurricane Dorian
PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Bahamians are marking the anniversary of a historic tragedy on Tuesday while dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. The devastating Category 5 Hurricane Dorian first made landfall Sept. 1, 2019 on the Abaco Islands and made a second landfall near Marsh Harbour. “I mean, I was pregnant; I was five months pregnant.”The massive flooding forced some to seek refuge in attics and cut holes in roofs. By Sept. 12, 2019, officials reported 1,300 people had vanished. Months later, Bahamas’ official death toll was 70, but it’s unclear how many people really died because there are still 200 people who are still considered missing.

Panama extradites Coral Gables rape suspect deported by ICE in 2018
Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said Orozcos deportation undercut the very credibility of the criminal justice system. Neither I nor our law enforcement partners could ever allow that to stand, Fernandez Rundle said in a statement. Miami-Dade prosecutors in the extradition section of the legal unit worked closely with the Coral Gables Police Department and the Department of Justice Office of International Affairs. Officers arrested him Sept. 11, 2018 and ICE deported him 13 days later. This criminal case will finally be resolved in a courtroom, Fernandez Rundle said.

Tropical Storm Isaias dies out as the tropics calm down
The Remnants of Tropical Storm Isaias will die out in Canada today, swept up into a larger northern storm system. Isaias threaded its way between the Palm Beach County coast and Grand Bahama Island a distance of about 70 miles. As Isaias turned north toward North Carolina, the circulation was energized by warm Gulf Stream water and the upper winds that turned conducive for strengthening. (National Hurricane Center)There have already been two tropical storms in the Northeast this year Fay and now Isaias and it is only the beginning of August. Dry air is forecast to dominate the tropics into next week, which should keep the disturbances coming off of Africa far south and under control.

Last Sunday, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said that beginning July 22, only international commercial flights and commercial vessels carrying passengers from Canada, the United Kingdom or the European Union were allowed to enter the Bahamas. But on Friday, there was a reversal, of sorts, of that decision making it possible for travelers from all countries to enter, even those from the United States. South Florida moisture surge could organize in the Gulf
A surge of tropical moisture will move over South Florida today and tomorrow. The moisture is on the north end of a tropical disturbance that extends from the Bahamas south across Cuba into the Caribbean Sea. Cloudiness and some bands of heavy thunderstorms are expected over the southern Florida peninsula with the moisture surge. The peak of the moisture is forecast to move through during the day today, but the tail of the system will still be pulling moisture over South Florida tomorrow. The system is most likely to move through the southern Caribbean islands or along the northern coast of Venezuela as a moisture surge late in the week.

Moisture surge for South Florida and a scattering of systems to watch in the tropics
A mass of tropical moisture associated with a tropical disturbance over the Bahamas will push through South Florida late today and tomorrow. Embedded in that flow are minor disturbances of increased moisture, drier patches, and eventually another round of Saharan Dust. This one also has a slight chance of organizing somewhat before it reaches the islands or the coast of South America. On the current schedule, the next round of Saharan Dust will reach Florida over the weekend or early next week. The combination of the dust and the strength of the Atlantic high should keep the tropical Atlantic quiet through this week, at least.

A wind shift for South Florida while a dust belt controls the tropics
The general flow of air over South Florida will be off the ocean for the foreseeable future, which will break the relentless heat. Embedded in that flow – which will extend all the way across the Atlantic from Africa to Florida – are moisture and wind surges, which are generally related to each other. Computer forecast of where the moisture surges will be Saturday. These surges are disturbances that have moistened a patch in the continuous flow of Saharan Dust over the tropical Atlantic. As long as the dust covers the tropical ocean, however, these so-called tropical waves can’t organize once they leave the African land mass.
