MIAMI — New details have emerged on Wednesday after a fight at Miami Northwestern Senior High School led to a stabbing, the arrest of three students and the hospitalization of an 18-year-old student earlier this week, according to investigators.
According to an arrest report from the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, Carlos Martinez, 15, was initially attacked by two students during a fight at the school on Monday.
Cellphone video circulating on social media appears to show two people punching, kicking and at one point body-slamming Martinez.
Martinez’s arrest report states that he later retrieved a knife and sprinted down the hallway in efforts for “retaliation on his attackers.”
Investigators said surveillance video showed Martinez “reaching into his pants and retrieving a light-colored blade shaped object.”
The report states that the video shows that he later returns to retrieve his belongings and “places the light-colored blade shaped object into his pants pocket before attempting to flee the scene.”
According to the report, the 18-year-old student who was injured told investigators, “I don’t know that kid at all.” He said Martinez was being “jumped by two random kids” and that he was watching the fight when everyone suddenly started running, according to investigators.
The report states the 18-year-old student told investigators he felt a push in his back, but initially thought one of the students running away had pushed him. Another student then told him, “Yo, you’re bleeding.” He said that was when he felt something dripping down his back, according to police.
Police said that the 18-year-old student told them that he “has never had any interaction, conversation or encounter” with Martinez.
The student suffered a puncture wound to the right side of his back that required stitches, according to the arrest report.
Police said Martinez also suffered injuries during the incident. The report states that he suffered “multiple self-inflicted lacerations” to the index and middle fingers of his right hand, which also required stitches.
The report states that an assistant principal later saw Martinez “fleeing the scene of the incident into the schools parking lot.”
Police said the assistant principal stopped Martinez and asked why he was bleeding. According to the report, Martinez admitted to having a knife in his rear pants pocket on the right-hand side, and the assistant principal confiscated it.
Investigators described the knife as having a 5-inch blade and being 10 inches long overall.
Police said the incident prompted a lockdown at the school. According to the arrest report, multiple Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office units responded to help maintain order while parents arrived at the school to pick up their children.
Martinez appeared in court Tuesday, where prosecutors said they intend to charge him as an adult. A judge ordered him to remain in secure detention and prohibited him from having contact with the other students involved in the incident.
Martinez’s parents told Local 10’s Trent Kelly after Tuesday’s court hearing that their son had been mistreated and threatened by other students for days.
“He was threatening my son, mistreating him,” his father said.
Jail records show Martinez is facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a weapon on school property and interference with an educational institution.
Local 10 has reached out to MDSPD for information on the identities of the other two students arrested and the charges they are facing.
