MIAMI — Miami police officers and firefighters gathered Friday morning to remember the first responders who bravely ran toward danger on Sept. 11.
Putting on a uniform, as so many did 25 years ago, is a reminder of the 411 first responders who never made it back home.
Even after all those years, their promise remains the same: to protect and to serve, even when they know they may not come home.
“The city of Miami sent 17 police officers to go help days after,” Miami Police Chief Edwin Lopez said.
As the American flag hangs above the fire trucks, it is a reminder that 25 years later, it isn’t just about remembering the work of heroes, but carrying that legacy forward.
“We can never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice, not only today but every single day,” Lopez said.
