MIRAMAR, Fla. — The city of Miramar hosted moments of silence Friday to mark 25 years since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.
The moments of silence were held at 8:46 a.m., when a plane struck the North Tower, and at 9:03 a.m., when a plane struck the South Tower.
U.S. Navy veteran Kevin Tyre told Local 10 News he had to be there to honor the fallen heroes and victims.
“I was in the first Desert Storm back in 1990,” Tyre said. “I was in the Middle East. I know the importance of just protecting the United States of America. That was a tragedy we will never forget.”
Local 10 evening anchor Calvin Hughes introduced the speakers at the ceremony.
Many started off by saying they were thankful Sept. 11, 2001 has not been forgotten.
Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam hosted the remembrance ceremony.
To conclude, a city wreath was placed on two columns from the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
Messam set up the memorial wall around the columns in 2023 after they had been sitting in storage for over a decade.
“Some of our residents have a direct connection to those attacks,” Messam said. “We’re really honored where we can honor those who lost their lives in New York, at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. Two columns are at the cornerstone of our memorial.”
Local 10 News spoke to veteran and pastor Robert Lemon about how Sept. 11 changed his viewpoint.
“It changed all of our lives forever, and it reminds us that we have to be ready,” Lemon said. “America’s freedom is not free. We all paid a price, regardless of color and ethnicity. We all are here as one rainbow melting pot. We protect by any means necessary.”
