Man rescued by 4 off-duty firefighters after collapsing at baseball game

Firefighters recognized for heroic actions in Cutler Bay

CUTLER BAY, Fla. – There were four off-duty Miami-Dade firefighters nearby when Gustavo Pardo collapsed March 25 on the third base line while coaching 8-year-olds.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Kirsten Miller and Lt. Ralph Ollervides Jr. were at the game. So were Dan Johnson, who is a retired Miami-Dade firefighter and Joel Mizelle of Miami Beach Fire Rescue.

The foursome immediately started CPR after determining that Pardo didn't have a pulse.

Pardo was then taken by a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue unit to a nearby hospital.

He has since been released from the hospital and shows no ill effects of a heart attack, a media release said.

The firefighters were reunited with Pardo at the Cutler Bay Town Center on Wednesday and were recognized for their life-saving efforts by the town of Cutler Bay.
