SUV crashes into utility pole, 2 people in Oakland Park

3 injured in crash, including 1 child

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – Three people were injured Monday after an SUV crashed into a utility pole and struck two pedestrians in Oakland Park, Broward Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said.

The incident was reported Monday morning near a bus stop at Northeast 56th Street and North Dixie Highway.

Sky 10 was above the scene just after 10 a.m. as the victims' personal items were lying in the street.

According to Concepcion, the SUV was heading south on North Dixie Highway just after 9:30 a.m. when the driver veered off the roadway and struck a utility pole and a woman and her 14-year-old son in front of the Holy Cross HealthPlex.

A witness told Local 10 News reporter Michael Seiden that the teen was screaming for help after getting pinned under the utility pole.

"I saw a pole dangling, bouncing and I saw a vehicle go right into the wall," Anthony Vessillo said. "Also, I see this woman in the street . I was in shock. I was just looking and all I could see was the pole dangling and wires coming down and there was smoke. Then I walked over and I saw a young kid pinned under the vehicle and a pole had hit him for a loop."

Oakland Park Fire Rescue took the woman to Broward Health North and the boy to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was taken into surgery.

"His legs were severed and he was just standing there saying, 'help me, help me,' and he was in shock," Vessillo said.

The mother and son's conditions were not immediately released.

Concepcion said the driver of the SUV walked away from the scene, but was found near the HealthPlex. He was taken to Broward Health Medical Center with minor injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but authorities are not investigating it as a hit-and-run.

Concepcion said authorities will decide whether to pursue any charges pending the outcome of the investigation.
