MIAMI – A former American Airlines mechanic accused of sabotaging an airplane that was scheduled to take off from Miami International Airport has pleaded guilty. Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani entered the plea Wednesday in Miami federal court. According to a federal complaint, Alani admitted to sabotaging the plane July 17 as it was scheduled to fly from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas, because he wanted to get overtime pay to fix it. Federal authorities said surveillance video showed Alani fidgeting with equipment in the compartment where the plane’s air data module system is located. This afternoon Abdul Alani entered a plea of guilty in federal court to the charge in the indictment.

McAliley ordered Alani, who could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted, to be held without bond.

An American Airlines mechanic later discovered a loosely connected tube that connects to the air data module system. There were 150 people on the American Airlines plane when the flight was aborted. A spokesman for American Airlines said in a statement Wednesday that the airline is continuing to cooperate with federal authorities in the investigation.

Rather, his motive stemmed from the stalled contract dispute between union workers and American Airlines, Alani confessed, according to the affidavit. MIAMI - A mechanic for American Airlines was arrested Thursday and accused of trying to sabotage a commercial airliner shortly before it was set to take off from Miami International Airport for the Bahamas with 150 people on board. Alani allegedly tried to damage or disable the aircraft's air data module (ADM) system, which reports aircraft speed, pitch and other critical data, on July 17. As the plane went down the runway and pilots increased power to the engines, there was an error related to the ADM system and the takeoff was aborted.
