Phil Neville was too nervous to answer questions in Spanish on Friday but plans to starting after this season’s opener.

The Football Association has released Neville from his contract immediately after being informed he was in talks to become coach of Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer franchise partly owned by David Beckham. They’re teaming up again with hopes of winning more trophies with Inter Miami. Neville was hired Monday as Inter Miami’s coach, reuniting with Beckham — a co-owner of the MLS club. He will formally start at Inter Miami once he gets a work visa. Alonso got Inter Miami to the MLS Cup playoffs in 2020, marking the seventh time an MLS newcomer reached the postseason.

MIAMI – Inter Miami’s tumultuous offseason has continued with the announcement that Diego Alonso will not be back as coach for the club’s second season. Alonso got the team to the MLS Cup playoffs in 2020. That marked the seventh time that an expansion franchise reached the postseason. But Inter Miami was routed by fellow expansion club Nashville in that playoff appearance, finished 10th in the Eastern Conference and wound up with a 7-13-3 record.

Inter Miami are already looking forward to next season after revealing their year-end roster decisions for the 2021 campaign. He’s only featured for 33 minutes in the English Premier League (EPL) this term and a switch to Inter Miami – and a chance to link up with Gonzalo Higuain – would surely appeal. A front line of Giroud and Higuain would certainly be one of the most powerful strike forces in the MLS for 2021. All of which will help to build the Inter Miami brand. An experienced spine of Ramos, Matuidi, Higuain and Giroud would certainly be an intriguing foundation for Miami next season.
