HBO Max May Release 10 Warner Bros Titles Straight-To-Streaming

WASHINGTON – After deciding to release its full slate of 2021 Warner Bros. films on HBO Max under a hybrid streaming and theatrical model, it seems WarnerMedia is prepared to continue using its Warner Bros. assets for luring subscribers to the service in 2022. During AT & T’s second-quarter earnings call this week, the company’s executives were asked how the pandemic release model would shape a more permanent release strategy as they advance, particularly as it relates to theaters, said reports. ”He went on to say that Warner Bros. will be producing ten films that will debut on HBO Max the same day they’re released. WarnerMedia faced significant backlash when it announced earlier this year that its 2021 slate of films would debut under its same-day streaming and theatrical release model. All through the second quarter, Home Box Office (HBO) and HBO Max saw growth of 47 million United States subscribers, which is 2.8 million greater than the first quarter.

Warner Bros. CEO defends hybrid film release model, says studio is in talks with top talent

On Tuesday, Ann Sarnoff, the chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Entertainment, defended that decision. Like many film studios, Warner Bros. has been forced to postpone blockbuster features due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, it's looking for a way to have theatrical releases but also bolster its HBO Max streaming service. "It's a unilateral decision that the studio took," Christopher Nolan, a notable filmmaker and frequent Warner Bros. collaborator, told the Associated Press on Monday. Nolan famously pressured Warner Bros. to release his film "Tenet" on the big screen instead of making it available for purchase on premium video on demand.

Christopher Nolan calls Warner's streaming plan ‘a mess’

Christopher Nolan, one of Warner Bros.’ most important filmmakers, has come out strongly against the company’s decision to debut its films on HBO Max and in theaters in 2021. The “Tenet” filmmaker told The Associated Press Monday that it’s not a good business decision and criticized how the company handled it. “I’ve never seen everybody so upset about one particular decision,” Nolan said. And it’s not a good business decision," Nolan said. With major markets like Los Angeles and New York closed, domestic ticket sales fizzled, and Warner Bros. and other studios responded by delaying the year’s remaining major films.

Your movie theater experience is going extinct

People walk outside the newly boarded AMC 34th Street 14 movie theater as the city continues Phase 4 of re-opening following restrictions imposed to slow the spread of coronavirus on September 4, 2020 in New York City. (WarnerMedia previously announced that "Wonder Woman 1984" will debut on HBO Max on Christmas Day.) With the rise of streaming video, interest in going to a theater and spending all that time and money to watch a two-hour movie plummeted except for the biggest blockbusters. Early on in the pandemic, Disney released its Pixar animated movie "Onward" directly on its Disney+ streaming service, for example. "And the move into HBO Max undoubtedly will have downstream impacts on home video and rental revenue streams, as well."

WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar doesn't think he just destroyed the movie theater industry

On Thursday, AT&T's WarnerMedia announced it would release its entire 2021 slate of films directly on HBO Max at the same time they hit theaters. Even if the move becomes permanent, Kilar doesn't believe that ending the theatrical window would spell doom for movie theaters. HBO Max will debut globally next year. The move follows Warner Bros.' decision to put “Wonder Woman 1984” on HBO Max in December, along with a concurrent theatrical run. Warner Bros.' move amounts to an acknowledgement that any full rebound for theaters is still a year or more away. Warner Bros. confirmed the films will be available to subscribers with no further charge. After a rocky rollout, HBO Max said in October that nearly 9 million people were using HBO Max, though 29 million had access to the streaming service as part of their HBO subscriptions.

Warner Bros. will launch every 2021 movie on HBO Max at the same time they hit theaters

AT&T's Warner Bros. announced Thursday that all of its films scheduled to launch in 2021 will be released on HBO Max at the same time they are available in theaters. It's also a move that Warner Bros. already made with "Wonder Woman 1984," which will be released to theaters and HBO Max on Christmas Day. That movie was originally scheduled to come out in the summer, but was delayed several times before WarnerMedia decided to release it on HBO Max. HBO Max is AT&T's online video service, which launched in the U.S. in May. Before that accord, theaters had exclusive rights to Universal films for 90 days.

'Wonder Woman 1984' will debut in theaters and on HBO Max this Christmas

On Wednesday, HBO Max announced that "Wonder Woman 1984" would arrive on its streaming service on Dec. 25, the same day it hits theaters. "...We realize that a lot of consumers can't go back to the movies due to the pandemic, so we also want to give them the option to see Wonder Woman 1984 via our HBO Max platform." The decision to keep "Wonder Woman 1984" on the 2020 calendar will allow theater chains to make a profit off ticket sales and also drive subscriber sign-ups to HBO Max. The first "Wonder Woman" film had a $100 million opening weekend domestically and went on to garner more than $820 million at the global box office. Without titles like "Wonder Woman 1984" many would be forced to file for bankruptcy in order to restructure their finances and stay afloat.

HBO Max is finally launching on Amazon Fire TV

(L-R) TNT, TBS, truTV, HBO & HBO Max Content Acquisition EVP Michael Quigley, HBO Max CCO and TNT, TBS, & truTV President Kevin Reilly and HBO Max Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey appear onstage during the HBO Max executive session segment of the 2020 Winter Television Critics Association Press Tour at The Langham Huntington, Pasadena on January 15, 2020 in Pasadena, California. WarnerMedia's HBO Max will begin rolling out this week on Amazon Fire TV and Fire tablets, roughly six months after its launch. HBO Max debuted in May for phones and a variety of smart TV platforms, but was notably absent from two of the largest streaming TV platforms: Amazon Fire TV and Roku. Starting Tuesday, the HBO app on Fire devices will automatically update to HBO Max, and users can sign in with their existing HBO credentials. Current HBO Max customers can access the app on their Fire devices using their existing credentials.

Warner Bros. weighs 'Wonder Woman 1984' release as Covid cases continue to spike

With six weeks to go before "Wonder Woman 1984" is set to debut in theaters, Warner Bros. executives are still debating the film's release strategy. Representatives from Warner Bros. did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment. However, if "Wonder Woman 1984" goes to HBO Max, it's unlikely that theaters would get a cut, like AMC does from its premium video on-demand deal with Universal. Variety points out in its report that "Wonder Woman 1984" is easily a billion-dollar grossing box office blockbuster, something that is hard for studio executives to ignore. That paltry showing coupled with a sharp rise in coronavirus cases in the U.S. could persuade Warner Bros. to move "Wonder Woman 1984" to June or July of 2021.

Zemeckis’ ‘The Witches’ heads to HBO Max for Halloween

The Robert Zemeckis adaptation of “Roald Dahl’s The Witches” has found a new home on HBO Max this month just in time for Halloween. Warner Bros. said Friday that “The Witches” will debut on the subscription streaming service, owned by parent company WarnerMedia, on Oct. 22. Dahl’s 1983 novel about an orphaned boy who discovers a coven of witches that hate children was previously adapted for the big screen in 1990 by director Nicolas Roeg. It starred Angelica Huston, Mai Zetterling and Rowan Atkinson and was a box office flop, despite its critical acclaim. This new version has actor Jahzir Bruno playing the boy who must try to stop the witches from turning the world's children into mice.

You may be able to get HBO Max for free with an existing HBO subscription here's how

AT&T WarnerMedia's new online streaming service HBO Max launched on Wednesday. But it's also available at no cost for some people who already pay for HBO through a cable or online TV subscription, and for some AT&T subscribers. HBO Max includes more movies than what you get through HBO on TV, some original content, and TV shows like "Friends" you can't find on other competing platforms like Disney+, Netflix or Hulu. HBO Max also has offline downloads, so you can store movies to watch when you don't have a cellular or Wi-Fi connection -- that feature is not available in the regular HBO Go app, which is free for people who pay for HBO through a cable subscriber. Here's how to see if you can get HBO Max through the HBO subscription you already pay for.

HBO Max goes 'all in' on its big genre-driven streaming bet

Photo by Presley Ann/Getty Images for WarnerMedia(CNN) - With spotlights shining on soon-to-debut streaming services from Apple and Disney, WarnerMedia sought Tuesday to offer audiences a reminder: Set aside a few bucks for us. Not surprisingly, Warner Bros. stressed animation and programs like "Sesame Street" as a means of reaching kids a key component of the streaming business. Similarly, HBO Max will pad that portfolio of established fare for young adults via deals to stream "South Park" and "Doctor Who." That's a particularly good way of expressing what is, despite the meticulous planning by all these media companies, a great big gamble. WarnerMedia banks on HBO's brand name for new streaming service

By bringing it in-house, WarnerMedia is banking that "Friends" fans will migrate for a new streaming service. The streaming service will also include brand-new shows, called "Max Originals," and movies. The forthcoming streaming service has been a top priority ever since AT&T took control of WarnerMedia, then known as Time Warner, last summer. Reilly has been green-lighting new shows for the forthcoming streaming service for several months. Netflix tweeted on Tuesday, "We're sorry to see Friends go to Warner's streaming service at the beginning of 2020 (in The US).
