Disney's new streaming service won't be completely ad-free after all

Disney's streaming service, which is launching next week and had said it will be ad-free, will carry a one-time promotion for the cable channel Starz. Disney will show the promotion after the sign-up process, a Disney spokesperson told CNBC on Tuesday. The promotion highlights the complicated world of licensing as traditional media companies like Disney, AT&T's WarnerMedia and Comcast's NBCUniversal prepare their respective streaming services with their own shows and movies. Disney has in the past tapped revenue by signing costly licensing deals with TV channels and streaming services such as Netflix and Starz that allows those companies to show Disney-made movies. The Disney movies licensed to Starz includes "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which will be available for streaming when Disney+ launches.

Netflix boss not worried about losing 'Friends,' 'The Office'

Netflix via CNN(CNN) - Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos isn't worried about subscribers leaving the streaming service when "Friends" and "The Office" are no longer being there for them. "Friends" is scheduled to depart Netflix in 2020 and have a new home at WarnerMedia's HBO Max. "The Office," meanwhile, will depart Netflix in 2021 for NBC's forthcoming streaming service, Peacock. Sarandos admitted that while he would have "loved to have kept" the titles on Netflix for subscribers "we're also about change and keeping things fresh and we haven't had 'Seinfeld.' Asked if Netflix could maintain its spending -- reportedly it's investing $15 billion on original content alone -- he was certain.

Netflix vs AT&T: Here's which stock would have made you richer if you invested $1,000 10 years ago

Media conglomerate AT&T has its own streaming services and secured a place on the same list, but its stock hasn't seen quite the same success. Investing $1,000 in Netflix 10 years ago would have made you significantly richer today than had you put the same amount into AT&T. If you put $1,000 in AT&T over the same period, your investment would be worth about $2,200, a total return of around 125%. CNBC: AT&T stock as of July 22, 2019Despite seeing a dip in its stock performance and facing increasing competition from new streaming services, including Disney+, Netflix has a lot to be hopeful about, some experts say. Netflix says it can spend more on its own shows now that it's not paying for 'The Office' and 'Friends'

Yes, Netflix is losing "The Office" and "Friends" in the next two years. On Wednesday, Netflix released its second quarter earnings report, noting that losing these costly programs will free up the company's budget and allow it to spend more on its own original content. According to Streaming Observer, Netflix users watch about 164 million hours of content on the streaming service each day, or about 5 billion each month. To put that into context, that's about 60 billion hours of content in a year. Netflix has been prolific in adding new original content to its streaming service, it far and away exceeds what its competitors release each year.

Why NBC is paying $500 million to stream 'The Office,' a show it already owns

The streaming service is set to shell out $100 million per year for the show, even though it's technically a property of NBC's parent company. So, if "The Office" is an NBC show, why is NBC shelling out $500 million to put it on its forthcoming streaming service? In this case, the NBC streaming service is buying the rights to "The Office" from Universal Television. A person familiar with the negotiations said Netflix made an offer to keep "The Office" on its streaming service, but the offer was rejected. Netflix was willing to pay up to $90 million a year for the rights, but NBC topped the bid.
