Woman found wounded after shootout between detectives, man on scooter

Miami-Dade police say gunman opened fire at robbery detectives attempting traffic stop; 2 videos of shooting found

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ Two surveillance videos show the events surrounding a Wednesday night shootout between Miami-Dade police detectives and a gunman riding a scooter that injured a woman caught in the crossfire, police said.

The shootout occurred just before 9 p.m. near Northwest 66th Street and Northwest 22nd Avenue.

Surveillance video shows what appears to be a plain-clothed detective shooting at a man out of frame near a Wings on Fire restaurant.

A second video shows the possible gunman hiding behind a car and apparently pleading with the driver to let him in.

After a few moments, the man takes off running and the red vehicle drives off with the passenger door open.

Miami-Dade police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said robbery detectives attempted a traffic stop on a man riding a scooter when he opened fire at them. Detectives returned fire, but the man ran away.

Zabaleta said detectives later found a gun and detained a man, however it remains unclear whether he is the person shown in the surveillance footage.

Meanwhile, near Northwest 54th Street and Northwest 22nd Avenue, detectives found a woman inside the red car suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was shot in the shoulder and taken to Jackson Memorial Hospitalā€™s Ryder Trauma Center in stable condition.

"That vehicle was in the nearby vicinity during the shooting," Zabaleta said.

It wasnā€™t immediately known if the woman was shot by detectives or the gunman.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the police-involved shooting.

ā€œFDLEā€™s role is to investigate potential criminality by the law enforcement officers,ā€ the FDLE said in a statement. ā€œWe will determine the facts of the case and provide that information to the state attorneyā€™s office. The state attorneyā€™s office will determine whether or not charges will be filed.ā€
