Florida reports 5,294 new COVID-19 cases, 87 resident deaths Wednesday

22 more deaths in Broward, 10 in Miami-Dade

Florida health officials confirmed 5,294 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday and 87 more resident deaths as a result of the virus.

The state has now verified 2,057,735 COVID-19 cases since the outbreak began and 33,425 resident deaths, according to the latest health department data.

Another 647 non-residents have died in Florida from COVID-19.

Coronavirus-related deaths reported in the past day include 10 in Miami-Dade County, 22 in Broward County and four in Palm Beach County.

There have been 85,197 resident hospitalizations attributed to the novel coronavirus in the state.

Another 85 cases of people infected with COVID-19 variants have been detected in Florida this week, according to the CDC. That brings the state’s total to 2,351 cases of the U.K. (B.1.1.7) strain, 49 cases of the Brazilian (P.1) variant and 15 cases of the South African (B.1.351) strain.

At least 5,871,740 people have received vaccines in Florida, with 3,307,323 people in the state fully vaccinated.

Miami-Dade has had 738,909 people receive shots, Broward has had 515,829, Monroe 22,991 and Palm Beach County 431,760, according to the latest numbers posted by the state.

The statewide positivity rate for yesterday’s testing was 6.67%.

Worldwide, the number of COVID-19 cases reported is over 128.4 million. There have been more than 2.8 million deaths worldwide attributed to the pandemic, according to data compiled from various sources by Johns Hopkins University.

The United States has confirmed over 30.4 million cases and has had more than 551,000 deaths from COVID-19, the highest totals in the world.
