Investigations continue after 9 shot at CityPlace Doral’s Martini Bar

Crime scene: 29 spent bullet casings — 22 were 9mm and 7 were .40 caliber

DORAL, Fla. – Two investigations continued on Monday after nine people were shot on Saturday morning at CityPlace Doral’s Martini Bar in Miami-Dade County. Two died just 30 minutes before closing time.

There were two shootings after 3 a.m. in the bar at 3450 NW 83 Ave. The Miami-Dade Police Department was investigating a homicide and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement was investigating the police-involved shooting that followed.

The victim of the homicide was George Alejandro Castellanos. Relatives described him as a loving father, the bar’s head of security, and a student at Florida International University who aspired to have a career in law enforcement.

Castellanos’s alleged killer, Jamal Wayne Wood, died during the police-involved shooting that followed. Doral Police Chief Edwin Lopez reported two officers at the bar discharged their weapons.

The medical examiner’s office had the two men’s bodies. Castellanos was 23 and Wood was 37. Crime scene investigators collected a Springfield Armory XD .40 pistol and 29 spent bullet casings — 22 were 9mm and seven were .40 caliber, according to Local 10 News sources who revealed details on Sunday.

Detectives believe the pistol belonged to Wood and he decided to use it after he got into an argument with a woman and into a fistfight with a man who intervened.

“Why would he have a gun? It was for something so not serious,” Castellanos’s grieving younger brother Miguel Castellanos said on Sunday.

One of the police officers, a bar security guard, and five civilians were wounded. Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department, said on Saturday that it was too early to tell where the bullets came from.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded. The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office was also at the scene. Lopez said police officers from the neighboring Medley and Sweetwater departments helped to secure the scene.

This is what police sources reported detectives had so far on the six civilians — four men and two women — injured who survived:

  • The 38-year-old man who intervened during an initial argument between Woods and a woman first suffered several gunshot wounds and his condition was critical. He was at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.
  • Catellanos’s 28-year-old colleague at the bar was shot in the hand, and a 34-year-old man was injured in the abdomen. They were in stable condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
  • A 30-year-old woman in stable condition, a 57-year-old man in stable condition, and a 48-year-old woman in stable condition were at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.
