The NAACP issued a formal travel advisory for Florida Sunday night, saying the state has become "hostile to Black Americans" under Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.

It all started with one week in 1926, when one organization chose the second week of February to promote the achievements by Black Americans and other people of African descent.

Researchers at the University of Miami-Miller School of Medicine are leading a major international study investigating the link between ethnicity and Alzheimer’s disease.

While there are similarities across populations, a recent study specifically analyzed data collected from over 8,000 African-Americans. “This is important because we are trying to determine the biologist and get a better understanding of the biology. In other health news, a recent study suggests that people with Type-2 diabetes might be able to reduce their mortality risk by drinking coffee and green tea. Because the study was observational, it’s not possible to prove that green tea and coffee reduce the odds of dying, only that consuming these beverages is associated with lower odds.

Economists have forecast that the government will report Friday that employers shed 8.5 million more jobs last month on top of 21.4 million lost in March and April. The economic shock, like the pandemic itself, has widened economic disparities that have disproportionately hurt minorities and lower-educated workers. But business closures related to the unrest could cause job losses that would be reflected in the June jobs report to be issued next month. That is still more than all the jobs lost in the Great Recession. Oxford Economics estimates that the economy will regain 17 million jobs by years end, a huge increase by historical standards.

MIAMI – One of the oldest cemeteries in Miami -- and resting place for some of the most prominent African-Americans in the city's history -- has been the target for a recent rash of vandals and grave robbers. Arthur Kennedy has family members buried at the cemetery. He grew up in the neighborhood, and he's been visiting Evergreen and doing some caretaking his whole life. Although the family that owns the Miami Times newspaper bought Evergreen out of foreclosure, there is little funding for upkeep or security.
