NHC(CNN) - A brewing storm system is posing a new threat to the northern islands of the Bahamas hit hard by Hurricane Dorian, and meteorologists say it could likely become a tropical storm over the weekend. Tropical storm warnings have been issued for areas of the northern Bahamas, and a tropical storm watch has been issued for portions of the east coast of Florida, according to the NHC. The new storm system will likely steam toward Florida on Saturday after bringing squally winds and rain to the Bahamas. Those rain totals may be lower, with 1 to 2 inches falling across the northern Bahamas, other forecast models show. It's many days from posing any threat to the United States or the Bahamas, Van Dam said.

Security improvements are being implemented across storm-impacted areas so recovery work can continue, or in some places, begin. Armed government officials were seen in the Marsh Harbour area of Abaco to help with security. This comes as evacuations continue for residents, while officials work to determine the scale of the devastation. "To see Marsh Harbour at a place where everything is at a standstill, this is unlike anything you have ever imagined," Bootle said.

The UK Ministry of Defence has released aerial images of the damage from Dorian on Great Abaco, in the Bahamas. Search and rescue crews with cadaver dogs ferreted through rubble on the Abaco islands. Most of the evacuees who arrived in Palm Beach by cruise ship were picked up by family members or were provided transportation to reach loved ones in the area. Of the 1,435 evacuees aboard the cruise ship, 539 are US citizens or lawful permanent residents, US Customs and Border Protection said. Seymour, who arrived in Florida on the humanitarian cruise with 16 cousins and grandchildren, will stay with a sister is Port St. Lucie for now.

Strong winds and driving rain have been pounding the Bahamas as the powerful Category 5 storm begins to move across the region. Conditions began to deteriorate after 6 a.m., with wind speed picking up seemingly every hour. Officials are concerned about storm surge from Dorian, especially due to the slow speed of the massive storm. The eye of Hurricane Dorian is expected to begin moving through the Bahamas around noon.
