BAL HARBOUR, Fla. – A Miami-Dade firefighter was injured Tuesday morning in a long fall in Bal Harbour. The accident occurred about 7:30 a.m. inside the Neiman Marcus at the Bal Harbour Shops on Collins Avenue. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Erica Benitez said firefighters were assisting a person who was stuck in an elevator on the third floor when he fell. The firefighter, later identified as David Gonzalez, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where underwent surgery for four hours. A man who was delivering a washing machine and dryer to her home in Boca Raton is accused in her death. Private security guards checked vehicles Thursday morning as they entered the property of the temple where loved ones are gathering to say their final goodbyes to Evelyn Smith Udell. Police said Gonzalez's co-worker, Jorge Lachazo, 21, of Hialeah, beat Smith Udell with a mallet and doused her with a chemical he found in the house. Smith Udell, a former longtime librarian at Florida Atlantic University, was taken to Delray Medical Center, where she later died.

Deputy Justin Lambert's accuser, David Gonzalez, testified Wednesday for the second day in the trial of the deputy, who is accused of battery and falsifying records. Lambert and another deputy, Mike Manresa, responded and reported that Gonzalez was belligerent, swore at them and lunged at them while raising his hand. "Yes," Gonzalez responded. Surveillance video was also played for the jury in court to show that Gonzalez had been stealing from the store.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Opening statements began Tuesday in the trial of a Broward Sheriff's Office deputy accused of battery and falsifying records nearly five years ago. Deputy Justin Lambert was arrested for an incident in 2014 when he and another deputy, Mike Manresa, were caught on video beating David Gonzalez in front of a Deerfield Beach gas station. The station manager accused Gonzalez of stealing candy and beer. "Justin Lambert exercised restraint." Along with battery, Lambert and Manresa were also charged with falsifying records to suggest their actions were necessary to subdue Gonzalez.
