Ban on renter evictions during COVID-19 pandemic is extended

(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer, File)WASHINGTON – The Biden administration is extending a federal moratorium on evictions of tenants who have fallen behind on rent during the coronavirus pandemic. AdIn February, President Joe Biden extended a ban on housing foreclosures to June 30 to help homeowners struggling during the pandemic. AdBut Pollock and other housing advocates were disappointed that Biden merely extended the ban without addressing several issues that put many tenants at risk of eviction. “In Massachusetts, judges have green-lighted over 1,700 evictions under the federal eviction moratorium.

The eviction moratorium is expiring. What will Biden do?
Still, they argue the existing moratorium hasn’t been a blanket protection and say thousands of families have been evicted for other reasons beyond nonpayment of rent. Eric Dunn, director of litigation for the National Housing Law Project, noted signs that a decision has already quietly been made. “The question is: What is the extension going to look like?”Dunn and others would like to see the moratorium extended and improved. Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package included more than $25 billion in emergency rental assistance, plus more to help tenants who were behind on their utilities, but no extension of the eviction moratorium. One of the biggest changes being advocated is for Biden to make the ban's protection's automatic and universal.

Congress certifies Biden election after 4 die during insurrection
(Senate Television via AP)WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congress certified the election of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris on Thursday morning only hours after a violent mob takeover at the Capitol. But shortly before he was to begin speaking, demonstrators broke into the Capitol building, reaching as far as the Senate floor. “I call on this mob to pull back and allow democracy to go forward,” said the president-elect. In an address that took only about 10 minutes and was televised against a split screen of the still-occupied Capitol building, Biden attempted to project calm and to say that a deeply divided country can still come together. “We need to be honest — the next few weeks and months are going to be very tough, very tough for our nation. Maybe the toughest during this entire pandemic,” Biden said during remarks in Wilmington, Delaware on Tuesday. At the current pace, Biden said, “it’s gonna take years, not months, to vaccinate the American people.”President Donald Trump deflected Biden's critique. Biden received his first dose of the vaccine on live television last week, and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris received hers, also on television, on Tuesday. Still, Biden warned that it would take months after he’s in office for Americans to see positive change in the course of the virus.

Biden: Trump 'failed' to shore up nation's cybersecurity
– President-elect Joe Biden on Tuesday assailed the Trump administration for failing to fortify the nation's cyber defenses, and called on President Donald Trump to publicly identify the perpetrator of a massive breach of U.S. government agencies — a hack some of Trump's top allies have blamed on Russia. Biden, who is being briefed on high-level intelligence in preparation for taking office next month, said planning for the hack began as early as 2019. “There’s still so much we don’t know,” Biden said during a news conference in Wilmington, Delaware. “The truth is, the Trump administration failed to prioritize cybersecurity,” Biden said. Watching Sun Belt spikes, other states back off on reopening
NEW YORK New York City and states that likewise seemed to have tamed their coronavirus outbreaks are hitting pause on some of their reopening plans because of the alarming surge in reported infections across the Sun Belt and other parts of the U.S. But the news we have gotten from around the country gets worse and worse all the time, he said. That is higher even than what the nation witnessed during the deadliest stretch of the crisis in mid-April through early May. Outbreaks in Florida, Arizona, Texas and California have already forced those states to backtrack and take such measures as shutting down bars and beaches and curbing restaurant capacity. Phil Murphy announced a pause on Monday, in part because of people not wearing masks and social distancing.

Tesla board must defend Elon Musk's compensation package, judge says
(CNN) - A Delaware judge ruled that Tesla's board of directors must stand trial to defend chief executive Elon Musk's multibillion dollar pay package. In a February 2018 proxy statement, Tesla's board wrote that it created this pay package to incentivize Musk to grow Tesla's market capitalization. In March 2018, Tesla's shareholders approved Musk's package with about 73% votes in favor, excluding votes from Musk and his family. Tesla valued the pay package at $2.6 billion on its 2018 proxy statement. But if Tesla's market value ballooned, as the payment plan predicted, those stock awards could be worth nearly $56 billion, according to a public filing.
