As Hollywood police continue to investigate the disturbing discovery of a dead baby in a construction site dumpster Monday, a board member for a South Florida nonprofit says it’s a tragedy that was ultimately preventable.

Firefighters recently responded to a report of a house fire on Southwest 15th Street in Plantation, but when they arrived, the fire hydrant was nowhere to be found. Trees were covering it. Even though the fire trucks carry water, it doesn’t last very long.

Students and staff members were evacuated from South Plantation High School Wednesday morning after a bomb threat was received, possibly from overseas, authorities confirmed.

PLANTATION, Fla. – As devastating flames engulfed part of a home early Sunday morning in Plantation, no one could get in or out. Plantation Fire Department Deputy Chief Joel Gordon said Monday afternoon that there was plywood covering the windows and all of the doors — except for one. There were also objects piled up inside, Gordon said. Firefighters said the hurricane plywood shutters prevented them from getting inside the home. Sara Reynolds, a neighbor, said Caldwell had put up the plywood during this very active Atlantic hurricane season, which ended Nov. 30.

"I had just gotten into work that morning, and there was a smell of gas," Total Nutrition business manager Graig Foulks said. Teco People's Gas spokeswoman Cherie Jacobs said the company was in the process of sending a crew to the shopping center when the blast occurred. A spokeswoman for the Greater Plantation Chamber of Commerce said her organization has asked hundreds of surrounding businesses to help the displaced workers.

The announcement comes just days after the explosion that injured 23 people, 19 of whom were hospitalized. It's unclear who the five victims intend to sue, as the investigation remains ongoing and authorities have not determined the official cause of the blast. Teco People's Gas spokeswoman Cherie Jacobs confirmed someone had called the company Saturday morning to report a smell of gas in the area. "The cause of this explosion remains undetermined," Jacobs said. Authorities confirmed a ruptured gas line was discovered after the explosion, but have not said whether that is what caused the blast.
