Commit to Clean Air

As scientific studies have shown, secondhand smoke causes approximately 7,330 deaths from lung cancer and 33,950 deaths from heart disease each year. Secondhand smoke contains hundreds of chemicals known to be toxic or carcinogenic, including formaldehyde, benzene, vinyl chloride, arsenic ammonia and hydrogen cyanide. The Florida Clean Indoor Air Act prohibits smoking in most public and private businesses, including restaurants. While the city cannot regulate smoking in outdoor restaurants, it believes that non-smokers and employees working at restaurants should be able to breathe smoke-free air. 100% smoke-free policies are the only effective way to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure.

You Might Feel Like Dancing After Seeing The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart

Amid our splintered pop-cultural moment, it's hard to fathom how big the Bee Gees were. A new documentary, The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, aims to convey the trio's massive impact — including its musical influence, which persists in the present day. As one might expect, the city the Bee Gees called home beginning in 1975 plays a strong supporting role in How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. Though the Bee Gees are straight cis white men, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart posits that much of the resentment had its roots in bigotry. The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.

Sunny Isles Beach Investigating Herbicide Use After Resident Complaints

Last Monday, Sunny Isles Beach resident Inna Sheflyand took her toddler to the Dezer Family Playground at a park near her home. After leaving the park that day, Sheflyand started an online petition asking the city to permanently stop the spraying of Roundup. But Myranda Tarr, a spokesperson for Sunny Isles Beach, says the city's contracts with landscapers already restrict the use of Roundup on city property. Sunny Isles Beach Commissioner Dana Goldman says she wanted residents to know the city has been proactive about restricting glyphosate use. Bayer, the parent company of Monsanto, which produces Roundup, contends that glyphosate isn't a carcinogen and has appealed those verdicts.

Sunny Isles Beach: Violate state law or just nip it in the Bud?

The issue at hand is the proposed development of the west side of the Town Center District. We have a fiduciary duty to comply with state law, Commissioner Goldman said at the meeting. Mayor Bud and his supporters on the city commission did not answer the question. During the hearing, Mayor Bud and Vice Mayor Larisa Svechin sought to stop Commissioner Goldman from explaining the benefits of her proposal. Maybe term-limited Mayor Bud is right about Commissioner Goldman.

Comments on developing West Side of Collins

This dense concrete jungle has already changed the openness of Sunny Isles Beach of years ago when the east side of Collins was all motels. We know that City mayor care only about tax money and not about Sunny Isles Beach resident. I moved to Sunny Isles Beach in 2004 from Miami Beach because of the heavy traffic there. I am horrified of the impact another 1000 residential unit/6000 unit hotel will have on the Sunny Isles Beach residents quality of life. Traffic is so congested; from 174th t can take more than 15 min to reach Sunny Isles Beach Blvd.

Residents Scorch Mayor Scholls Plan to Cram 9000 Residential Units Into the Town Center District of Sunny Isles Beach

Mayor Scholl was fresh off a vacation in Sicily when he breezed back into town with an idea that was so crazy it just might have worked. Mayor Scholl, you promised us that you would not support hi-rise buildings on the west side of Collins Avenue when you ran for Mayor in 2014, said one resident during the public hearing. In the end, the Commission voted to defer the matter to a later meeting. Danny Katz gave an impassioned speech to the City Commission about maintaining the quality life in the City. Commissioners Goldman has made her position clear and has voted no against the Mayors plan.

Residents, property owners say City Commission plan is a deathblow

Not this time, however, if dozens of angry residents and property owners in Sunny Isles Beach succeed in nipping a City Commission plan in the bud that would effectively permit developers to construct 6,000 hotel units and 1,000 residential units within a tight two-block radius. Not only is the proposed plan upsetting residents and affected property owners in Sunny Isles Beach, a coastal community which many residents believe is already overdeveloped, they say the plan will be a death blow to their quality of life. Its totally insane, says Raanan Katz, owner of several large shopping centers in Sunny Isles Beach. This plan to increase the development density and intensity on the west side of Collins is unacceptable to residents, especially where our streets and school are overcrowded. And my experience tells me that over-development on the west side of Collins Avenue will be highly detrimental.
