In spite of Isaias, things were hopping on Hollywood Beach

HOLLYWOOD BEACH, Fla. – The weather was still tolerable Saturday in the early evening along Hollywood Beach. It rained heavily around 3:30 p.m. and then a break as the outer band of Tropical Storm Isaias pushed through. People were out on the Hollywood Broadwalk and business owners did not close their doors but remained prepared. “We hope for a little sun before the storm,” Livio Leoni, a Hollywood resident who was out enjoying the beach Saturday, said. The change in weather did not force business owners to close.

Outback Steakhouse, Dominos Pizza and Taco Joint ordered shut last week

DAVIE, Fla. According to state records, an Outback Steakhouse in Davie, a Dominos Pizza in North Miami Beach and The Taco Joint on Hollywood Beach were all ordered shut last week by state inspectors. South Florida beaches are open, garbage is back

Anja Glassner and Tom Andrews, both of Hollywood, go out at the crack of dawn to pick up trash along Hollywood Beach. The two volunteers pick up the beach trash every morning four days a week. You can't even blame the garbage on tourists since it is primarily locals coming to the beach. “You see those things?” Glassner said. The behavior is confusing because no matter where you walk on Hollywood Beach, you are always within 10 steps of a trash can.

Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood differ in method to reopen beachfront areas for pedestrians, cyclists

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Broward County cyclists may encounter different realities in Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood this weekend. While Fort Lauderdale is closing the eastern northbound lanes of A1A from Las Olas to Sunrise, Hollywood has closed the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk. Raelin Storey, a spokesperson for the city of Hollywood, said this is because the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk is adjacent to the beach, so it makes it challenging to open one and not the other. White one lane of the road is closed to vehicles, orange and white barricades are up on A1A in Fort Lauderdale to give pedestrians room to walk, for proper social distancing. Broward cyclists face different restrictions in Fort Lauderdale, HollywoodCyclists say it is getting dangerous to bike in areas of Broward.

Lifeguards now enforcers for South Florida beaches

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Beaches are empty all across South Florida and even without swimmers and sunbathers, the lifeguards are still working. On a daily basis, when it's crowded, we talk to thousands of people," said Chief Alex O'Connor with Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue. That's also the case on Hollywood Beach, where some lifeguards are working later shifts to keep people off the sand. In Miami Beach, Ocean Rescue is posted at beach entrances. Most lifeguards want to get back to their usual duties when the beaches are crowded again with locals and tourists.

Why are some businesses still open in Broward County?

On Friday, Broward County Administrator Bertha Henry clarified in a statement that Broward County has not issued any Executive Order or Declaration requiring that non-essential business close in response to COVID-19. Broward County, however, is adhering to the guidelines of the Governor’s Executive Orders, the statement said. “Following the lead of many county governments across Florida and the nation, Broward County has taken numerous actions to protect its employees and customers while still providing essential services to the public,” said County Administrator Bertha Henry in an editorial that ran in the Sun-Sentinel newspaper. In a statement from Henry’s office, the County Administrator stated:“The Governor stressed that these measures represented a “minimum response” for Florida. Counties and municipalities were left free to announce more stringent measures, which several Broward County cities and Miami-Dade County have done.

COVID-19 risk follows couple from Seattle to Broward County’s Hollywood Beach

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Two tourists, Dr. Steve Smith and his wife, Carla Granat, were walking near the beach on Thursday in Hollywood. They are from the state of Washington, where at least 66 people have died of COVID-19. They found serenity in Hollywood, but now that authorities have closed the beach, restaurants, and other venues, they are considering flying back to Seattle. “Statistically, I am going to be OK doing what I am doing," Granat said. Officials announced a COVID-19 patient died in Duval County raising the number of deaths in Florida to nine.

The owner of the condo building, called The Bellamar Residences at Hollywood Beach, Luis Stabinski, believes it will revamp the area. The high rise will also be taller than what is normally allowed in the city of Hollywood, but Stabinski reached a settlement with Hollywood City commissioners easing the height restrictions, which is another reason people are upset. Hollywood resident Gale Levine said. "Having a project like this on the books is going to bring a higher property value to the area and really start changing the look of what Hollywood Beach represents," Hollywood resident and business owner Debra Case said.

Water main valve break prompts boil-water advisory in Hollywood

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Officials issued a precautionary boil-water advisory Monday night for some residents in the city of Hollywood. Utility crews are working to repair a broken water main valve at Scott Street and A1A on Hollywood Beach. The damaged valve is impacting water service between New Mexico and Harding Streets on the west side of A1A. Water customers in this area should boil their drinking water for one minute before consuming it until further notice. Crews will have to turn off water service for approximately two hours to make the repairs.

Rescue responds to report of swimmer vanishing off Hollywood Beach

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – There were reports that a swimmer vanished on Friday evening off Hollywood Beach, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. Witnesses said both Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood fire rescue crews were searching off the N. Broadwalk between Johnson and Grant streets. Hollywood Police Department's spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said there was a report of "possibly a missing person," but it was unconfirmed. Refresh this link for the latest information.
