The Delray Beach Fire Rescue driver-engineer who drove around lowered crossing gates and into the path of a Brightline train in December, causing a crash that injured more than a dozen people, has been fired.

According to the SunSentinel, Robert Hoecherl was driving his SUV on I-95 with a tire that was completely flat. Troopers said at the time of the stop, Hoecherl's speech was slurred, his eyes were red and his breath smelled of alcohol.
