One South Florida organization is making an effort to meet the needs of students getting ready to go back to school.
The Local 10 Big Book Drive has collected and distributed over 150,000 books to South Florida kids and is looking to add to that number on Wednesday.
During this time of year, kids are told a man in a big red suit will make all their Christmas wishes come true. However, as Local 10 discovered, a very generous man, not from the North Pole, but from right here in South Florida, is making a difference for dozens of deserving girls.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The typical Valentine’s Day gifts are flowers and candies. His name is Steven Gurowitz, founder of the design firm Interiors by Steven G. Last December, Local 10 introduced Gurowitz to the Embrace Girls Foundation, a nonprofit which provides girl-centric, educational programs at Miami-Dade county schools. Founder and CEO of the organization, Velma Lawrence, hosted a special holiday party for two dozen girls who had achieved academic excellence. Last Saturday, Gurowitz and his team arrived at The Women’s Park in Southwest Miami-Dade with 16 brand new, customized bikes. It was a surprise for the girls who thought they were there for a Valentine’s Day Family Picnic.
