Examining just 5-on-5 play, Ekblad and Weegar have combined for 17 points (4-13-17) and a plus-4 on-ice rating while holding nearly identical Corsi For Percentages (53.9 for Weegar, 53.8 for Ekblad). ā€œI thought I had it with Brian Campbell, and it was great,ā€ Ekblad said. ā€œYou can tell they’re having fun and they’re both playing great,ā€ said Panthers alternate captain Keith Yandle. ā€œ(Ekblad and Weegar) remind me of those two guys, and you know their story was spectacular.

Coach Q said Panthers forward Noel Acciari was not with the team on the road and would miss 7-10 days with an upper-body injury. Florida’s 6-1-2 start through nine games is the second-best in franchise history, topped only by the 6-0-3 record to open the 1996-97 season. ā€œWe've been consistent in most games," Florida coach Joel Quenneville said. Starting poorly, however, has pretty much snuffed out some Panthers seasons before they even started. The five Florida teams that went to the playoffs — 1995-96, 1996-97, 1999-2000, 2011-12 and 2015-16 — averaged 12 standings points through the season’s first nine games. The ongoing, and once again surging coronavirus pandemic was going to produce unknown hurdles and obstacles throughout the condensed campaign. The Florida Panthers one and only chance for a tune-up game was a blur of missed opportunities and defensive zone coverage that left something to be desired. Even with the awful result on Wednesday, it hasn't cost the Panthers a single inch in the Qualifying Round. MATHESONS NIGHTMARE AFTERNOONDefenseman Mike Matheson may have played himself out of a roster spot in Saturday's Qualifying Round opener against the Isles. In a unique situation like this, youre going from not playing to playing playoff-style hockey, so youve got to embrace the grind mentally, physically. This is a different kind of grind after four-plus months off the ice. Eddie Olczyk won and lost one best-of-five series early in his playing career with Chicago and remembers the nerves of being 18 and 19 years old in those moments. Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour understands that urgency despite being drafted two years after the NHL moved to all best-of-seven series. His Hurricanes face the Rangers, whose president, John Davidson, won the only two best-of-five series he played in with New York. In a short series, Quenneville said, anything can happen.___AP Hockey Writer John Wawrow contributed to this report.

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. One of the more unsung heroes for the Florida Panthers this season has been defenseman Aaron Ekblad. Playing his sixth year in the NHL after being selected first overall by Florida in 2014, Ekblad saw his all-around game blossom under new head coach Joel Quenneville. CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. When the Florida Panthers added NHL veteran Brian Boyle to the roster back in October, nobody really batted an eye. Brian Boyle, a two-time Stanley Cup finalist with 114 playoff games under his belt, was signed by a young, inexperienced Panthers franchise desperate to break through to the next level. He's really responsible, he can play the wing, he's got speed and he's good on draws. He's been good to play with; he's been good to be around, and I think he's been good for our group. If all goes according to plan, Boyle, Connolly and the rest of the Panthers will be away from South Florida for two months.
