Lee scours out a new eye, may bring a close brush to Bermuda and New England
While Hurricane Lee didn’t strengthen on Monday, it still managed to up the ante – doubling in size by one measure while maintaining its peak winds. All else equal, the developments increase the hurricane’s destructive potential and ability to generate long-period waves and dangerous marine conditions that will affect the entire Eastern Seaboard this week.

Patriots' NFL-record division title streak will end at 11
– For just the fourth time since Bill Belichick became Patriots coach in 2000, New England won’t end the season as AFC East champions. The Buffalo Bills improved to 10-3 overall and 7-2 in the conference with their 26-15 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night. It eliminated the hopes of New England (6-7, 5-4) to extend its NFL-record run of 11 straight division titles. Chargers make blown leads an art form in season full of them
(AP Photo/Jack Dempsey)In a season full of blown leads, perhaps no team has perfected the art of the late-game collapse better than the Los Angeles Chargers. That makes the Chargers the first team in NFL history to blow a lead of at least 16 points in four straight games. While the Chargers have blown the biggest leads, there have been plenty of other teams to squander big advantages. MISSING TOM: The Patriots have gone three straight games without a touchdown pass for the first time since Tom Brady’s first year as the New England starter in 2001. The Jets have also gone three straight games without a TD pass, meaning these teams will take the two longest active streaks into their meeting on Monday night.
400 years on, Mayflower's legacy includes pride, prejudice
Annawon Weeden, 46, a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, sits for a portrait outside his home in Oakdale, Conn., Friday, Sept. 25, 2020. The soul-searching extends across the Atlantic to England, where Mayflower descendants say they, too, are trying to reconcile pride and prejudice. When the Pilgrims arrived at what we now know as Plymouth, Massachusetts, the Wampanoag tribe helped the exhausted settlers survive their first winter. But Native Americans also endured racism, oppression and new diseases brought by the European settlers. “It’s opening up everyone else’s eyes to how unbalanced the world is and unequal,” said Troy Currence, Hazel Harding Currence's son and a medicine man from the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe.

Broncos running backs coach tests positive for coronavirus
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Denver Broncos running backs coach Curtis Modkins has tested positive for COVID-19 and won’t accompany the team on its trip to New England. “We will take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our team, opponents and community,” the team added. On Friday, the Broncos held running back Melvin Gordon out of practice because of what coach Vic Fangio said was an illness unrelated to the coronavirus. The Patriots canceled practice Friday and later placed center James Ferentz on the reserve/COVID-19 list. On Saturday, the Broncos announced they had elevated defensive lineman Sylvester Williams to the active roster along with running back Jeremy Cox and linebacker Josh Watson.
GM had personal stake in protecting Titans from COVID-19
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee general manager Jon Robinson has a very personal stake in keeping the Titans safe during the coronavirus pandemic. Robinson noted that's why the Titans worked hard to follow all protocols to protect everyone connected with the franchise. Still, the Titans wound up with the NFL's first COVID-19 outbreak, with a total of 24 players and personnel testing positive since Sept. 24. “We’ve been extremely transparent with both groups with our situation as they try to piece things together,” Robinson said of the NFL and the NFL Players Association. The NFL allowed Tennessee to practice with only players, coaches and trainers Sunday after the team closed its facility following a staff member testing positive.
Broncos coach: virus outbreak shows who the 'whiners are'
“Yeah, we compete like hell on Sundays to beat each other, but ultimately we’re all in this thing together,” Fangio said. The Broncos (1-3) were supposed to host the Chargers that week, and that game was moved up to Nov. 1, which was originally Denver’s bye. So, the Broncos will have had a 17-day break between games and won't get another break all season. The Patriots wouldn't be nearly as inconvenienced, simply having to flip-flop their bye week with their game against Denver. “What makes it harder for us compared to baseball is we can’t go and play doubleheaders and we can’t make a nine-inning game and seven-inning game,” Fangio said.
Patriots all-virtual in prep for delayed game vs. Broncos
– New England coach Bill Belichick says the team is continuing to prepare to play its against the Denver Broncos after the Patriots returned no new positive COVID-19 tests on Thursday. “This is really more of a medical situation than a football situation,” Belichick said during a conference call Thursday morning. “So we’ll work through the decisions and input from the people in the medical field, a combination of the Patriots and league. Gilmore didn’t test positive until Tuesday. If a player tests positive but shows no symptoms, he must either wait 10 days from the initial positive test, or can return after having two consecutive negative tests 24 hours apart.

The Titans' facility remains closed with the team still prohibited from any in-person activities. Sills noted they wanted to learn how to improve and the NFL already has made a number of changes.
NFL looking at "several" protocol incidents with Titans
FILE - In this Sept. 27, 2020, file photo, members of the Tennessee Titans take part in the national anthem before an NFL football game against the Minnesota Vikings, in Minneapolis. The Titans had no positive tests Monday or Tuesday for the first time after six consecutive days of positive results. The Titans cannot return to their facility before Saturday at the earliest, needing back-to-back days without a positive test result. Titans coach Mike Vrabel said Tuesday any discipline would be something for the NFL to discuss. Both Sills and Dr. Thom Mayer, the NFL Players Association's medical director, said the key is everyone following the protocols.
Chiefs-Patriots game off after Newton positive for COVID-19
– The NFL postponed this week’s game between New England and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs after “positive COVID-19 tests on both teams.” Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton and Chiefs practice squad quarterback Jordan Ta’amu were both added to the NFL’s COVID-19 reserve list released on Saturday afternoon. It is the second game this weekend that has been affected by COVID-19. After an outbreak on the Titans, the matchup between Pittsburgh and Tennessee was postponed — originally for a day or two, and then until Oct. 25 as the positive tests accumulated. But if a player tests positive and is asymptomatic, he can return 10 days after the initial positive test or just five days if he has two consecutive negative tests. I think we all knew at some point we might get some positive tests.

Newton feeling thankful, not pressure taking over as Pats QB
– There are a lot of things Cam Newton is feeling as he prepares to take the field Sunday to succeed Tom Brady as the Patriots’ starting quarterback. “Pressure is when you’re looking at your children and you’re saying you’re 31 and you don’t know. “So for me, I’m elated, I’m excited, I’m all that and a bag of chips because I knew that if God didn’t show favor over me, man, who knows where I’d be right now,” he said. It was just four years ago that Jacoby Brissett became the first Black quarterback to start for New England in 2016. A lot of eyes will be on him, including from his new teammates who will also be reveling in seeing Newton take the field.

After 400 years, Native stories at heart of Mayflower events
A year of trans-Atlantic commemorations marking the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage opens in Southampton, England, on Saturday with an exhibition centered on one casualty of colonization: the wampum belt of Metacom, a 17th-century leader of the Wampanoag Native American nation. In 1620, the Wampanoag, who had lived for millennia in what is now New England, helped the exhausted Mayflower settlers survive their first winter. Wampum belts made with beads fashioned from the white and purple shells of whelks and quahog play a central role in the culture of the Wampanaog and other Native peoples in eastern North America. The coronavirus pandemic has pushed many events into 2021, including a trans-Atlantic voyage by Mayflower 400, a crewless ship. Peters said viewing wampum belts in the British Museum on a research trip before the pandemic was an emotional experience.
More seals means learning to live with sharks in New England
Many scientists believe the increased seal population is leading to more human encounters with white sharks, who prey on seals. (AP Photo/Robert F. Bukaty)PORTLAND, Maine – Seals are thriving off the Northeast coast thanks to decades of protections, and that victory for wildlife has brought a consequence for humans — more encounters with sharks. Seals are a favorite prey of large sharks such as the great white.
