HIALEAH, Fla. – There has been a higher demand for consumer fireworks in South Florida ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations, but there is also a short supply. Patricia Taime owns the Fireworks Lady & Co., which operates seasonal firework sales tent locations throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties. “We did extremely, extremely well,” Taime said about her sales as a consumer fireworks supplier. This is all to blame for the nationwide shortage of consumer fireworks, she said. Raul Caminero, who also profits from consumer fireworks sales, said there have been many complications during the pandemic.
Zoo Miami reopens to public following two-month closure
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Zoo Miami reopened to visitors Tuesday after being forced to re-close its doors on the Fourth of July. “We feel relieved and a bit elated,” Ron Magill, of Zoo Miami, said. But with the state now entering Phase 2 of its reopening, zoo officials decided to reopen most outdoor attractions, but not without changes. Zoo officials are also limiting the number of guests they let in each day. “As long as I think they’re taking precautions and safety, I think it’s a good thing,” Ophelia Gualtieri said.

Portland shelters, animal hospital busy after the Fourth
CNN image(KPTV) - PORTLAND, Oregon -- Its a busy couple days for animal shelters and hospitals, as they care for more sick and stray pets from the Fourth of July. This Fourth of July they cared for 87 animals Thursday alone, compared to their 61 patients on an average day. We checked in with shelters in the area who also had quite a few lost pets. And Multnomah County Animal Services took in 21. As for this weekend, Multnomah County Animal Services will be waiving impound and board fees through Sunday as long as the pet is picked up by Tuesday.
Man arrested for pretending to be officer, pulling over deputy
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. - A Hillsborough County, Florida deputy sheriff arrested a 35-year-old man on Fourth of July after being accused of pretending to be a law enforcement officer. Hastings told him "he was a law enforcement officer and his credentials were at the office." He told the deputy he could follow him back to the "station" so he could obtain and show him his credentials. Shortly after exiting on Branch Forbes, Hastings was stopped by a Hillsborough County deputy, where he was detained while they interviewed the off-duty deputy. No handcuffs or firearms were located in the vehicle," the Sheriff's Office said.
Black bear spotted in Homestead neighborhood on Fourth of July
HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Residents were shocked to find a black bear roaming around their neighborhood in Homestead early in the morning on the Fourth of July. Fernando Morales, the bear was spotted around 1:30 a.m. Thursday in the Oasis housing development. Responding officers reported that the bear was not aggressive and they tracked it as it wandered through the neighborhood, keeping their vehicles between themselves and the bear. Morales said the officers contacted residents who live near where the bear had been and asked neighborhood associations to send out email alerts. According to Morales, there have been several bear sightings overnight in Homestead, with the last sighting being reported around 4:30 a.m. Friday.

World War II veteran crosses country on foot for second time
Over the course of two years and 10 months, over 2,631 miles, he crossed the country on foot, running from California to Georgia. At age 95, the World War II veteran has decided to do it again. He's clocked 175 miles into his second coast-to-coast trek, which he began in March when he left from Georgia's St. Simons Island. He hopes to run 13 miles a week through grueling heat or freezing cold for as long as he can. As he runs, the Navy veteran is raising funds to sail a restored World War II tanker to Normandy for a D-Day anniversary, a feat that he says will cost millions.

First responders warn public about dangers of fireworks, sparklers

"In 2018 alone, we had over 9,100 cases reported in emergency rooms due to burns and fire-related injuries. "We see all kinds of injuries, from burns to missing fingers to body parts that have been charred," Norat said. On Tuesday, they teamed with the Miami Burn Center at the University of Miami to demonstrate the dangers of using common fireworks, even with the known favorite -- sparklers. They can burn some metals and glasses, so just imagine what it can do to your kids' eyes and hands," Norat said.
July deadliest month for drunken driving
More people die in drunken driving crashes in July than any other month, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). "Backyard barbecues, fireworks displays and other festivities surrounding the Fourth of July holiday often include drinking, making it one of the deadliest holidays of the year," said Helen Witty, national president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, in a statement. The accompanying weekend is also prime for drunken driving. That year, 10,874 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes -- an average of one alcohol-impaired-driving fatality every 48 minutes. Staying off the roads, using public transit, and having a designated driver are all ways to stay safe this patriotic season.
