The duo landed in the Bahamas on Friday to cover the arrival of Hurricane Dorian at Marsh Harbour on Abaco Islands. The Abaco Islands are home to about 17,000 people. Video from the scene taken by Ely and described by Fernandez showed the absolute devastation Dorian left behind. Fernandez reported that the U.S. Coast Guard had arrived on Abaco Islands, which are to the east of Grand Bahama, and that she saw more on the way after she and Ely landed in Nassau.

After seeing the damage caused by the western part of the storm, she was could not comprehend how Marsh Harbour would withstand another beating from the other side. Fernandez described the scene inside the hotel where the Local 10 crew is sheltering during the storm.

According to an arrest report, Fernandez's body was burned beyond recognition and she was identified through dental records. Police said cellular tower records showed that Botell's and Fernandez's cellphones were pinging from the same tower the day she was reported missing. Police said Botell's statements contradicted witness testimony and the cellular tower records that placed him at the scene.
