Missing man from Miami Shores found inside truck pulled from El Portal canal
EL PORTAL, Fla. – A pickup truck was pulled from a canal in El Portal late Tuesday afternoon. Family members confirmed to Local 10 that 82-year-old Mernier Sainvil was found dead inside the truck. The yellow Ford pickup truck matched a description of the truck police said was being driven by Sainvil the last time he was seen on Friday. Police has yet to confirm the identity of the person found inside the truck. Family members were concerned when Sainvil, who is currently receiving dialysis, missed his last treatment.
Shooting leaves man injured near El Portal
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade detectives are investigating a shooting Friday night near El Portal. According to Detective Lee Cowart, a spokesman of the Miami-Dade Police Department, officers responded about 9:30 p.m. to Northwest 83rd Street and Northwest Sixth Avenue. Officers found a man injured. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel took the man to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Officers are asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
‘Somebody shot into my house,’ El Portal resident tells police
EL PORTAL, Fla. – Tamika Bickham was working on Friday night in her home office. “I told them, ‘I think somebody shot into my house,’” Bickham said. El Portal Police Department officers noticed the bullet went past her couch and right over the coffee table. “I could have been sitting there!”Miami-Dade Police Department officers were investigating a shooting near Bickham’s home at Northwest Fifth Avenue. The officers couldn’t confirm if the bullet at Bickham’s house was a stray bullet from that shooting.
Man arrested following uptick in shed burglaries in El Portal
EL PORTAL, Fla. A 52-year-old man has been arrested following an uptick in shed burglaries that had been occurring in the middle of the night throughout El Portal and nearby areas, authorities announced on Sunday. According to El Portal police, one man was apprehended last month during an operation authorities put together to catch the thieves. Luckily for the owner, the man dropped the stolen items and the property was returned. Sure enough, the officer spotted Hernandez riding into El Portal from 85th Street in violation of the curfew in place, authorities said. Police said they are reviewing old cases with surveillance video to determine whether Hernandez had any involvement in those burglaries.
Family members say teen dies after being shot in the head
MIAMI – A 15-year-old girl was shot in the head early Tuesday morning in Miami, police said. Family members have identified her as Arya Gray, and say the girl has died. It took police over 12 hours to process the scene, and they said it may have been an accidental shooting. The girl’s family said they can’t comprehend this and want to know where the gun came from. “(She was a) very peaceful person, she loved to be around her family, her friends, her brother and sister, and her sister actually witnessed everything -- witnessed her take her last breath.”Family members say 15-year-old Arya Gray (pictured) was shot in the head and killed.
Car thief crashes vehicle, ducks officer pursuit, slips away
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. - Police officers continue to search for a man who crashed a stolen vehicle and was able to evade officers. Officers pursued the driver of the vehicle, a gray Nissan, with lights and sirens on after running plates and determining the car was reported stolen, officers said. A short time later, the car thief crashed the vehicle into a parked black Cadillac on Northeast 98th Street and fled on foot in a Miami Shores neighborhood, officers said. Following the crash, officers established a two-block perimeter at Northeast 2nd Avenue and Northeast 98th Street and brought in K-9 units. The officers have recovered the vehicle while the search for the thief continues.
Burglar caught sitting in unlocked car says he 'was resting,' police say
Amos Shuler told an officer he "was resting" when he was caught sitting in the front seat of a Mercedes-Benz parked in the driveway of an El Portal home, police say. According to an arrest affidavit, an El Portal police officer was patrolling the neighborhood when he noticed someone sitting in the driver's seat of the Mercedes-Benz. When the officer confronted the man, later identified by police as Shuler, he told the officer he "was resting." Shuler also told the officer that he didn't live at the home but was waiting for his mother, the affidavit said. El Portal police are warning residents of recent burglaries to unlocked vehicles.
Gunshots damage parked cars, cause driver to crash into fence
MIAMI - Police are investigating after someone opened fire early Tuesday in Miami, striking at least two parked cars and causing a man to crash his car in the nearby village of El Portal. The incident occurred near Northeast 82nd Street and Northeast Fourth Place, just blocks away from the city limits. Miami police investigate after shots were fired near Northeast 82nd Street and Northeast Fourth Place. About two blocks north in El Portal, police were interviewing a man who appeared to have crashed his car into a chain-link fence. Unsure whether the shooter was firing at him, the man drove off before crashing into the fence on a dead-end road.
El Portal police warn residents about wandering coyote
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. - El Portal police are warning residents to be careful after a coyote was spotted wandering the area Monday. According to authorities, the coyote was last seen Monday on Northwest 92nd Street at First Avenue. El Portal resident Jessica Sirmans told Local 10 News reporter Janine Stanwood that her husband saw the coyote while taking their dog for a walk. Sirmans said her family has lived in the area for eight months and has seen animals like raccoons and possums, but never a coyote. The Miami Shores Fraternal Order of Police tweeted the El Portal Police Department back, saying the coyote has been around for years and typically lives on the Miami Shores golf course.
