Air travelers pay for convenience at FLL’s new coronavirus testing area
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – On Wednesday morning, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Aiport joined the growing list of airports around the country that have coronavirus testing areas. Nomi Health, a startup based in Utah, is operating it at the lower level of FLL’s Terminal 3, which is the airport’s main terminal. The service is only for air travelers who have plane tickets from FLL, or Miami and Palm Beach international airports. Tampa International Airport was the first airport in Florida to open a testing area in October with BayCare Health System. Despite coronavirus warnings from CDC, airports becoming busier in South Florida as travel increases ahead of Thanksgiving
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A rush of passengers arrived at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Sunday morning, with just four days to go before Thanksgiving. The flyers were clearly not phased despite a recommendation from the CDC to avoid Thanksgiving travel due to surging COVID-19 case numbers. Despite the warning, AAA says some 50 million Americans will still travel for turkey day; that’s only a ten percent drop compared to last year. Passengers at FLL that spoke with Local 10 view their decision to still travel as more of a personal choice. But others, like a woman traveling to Los Angeles, said they know the risks and are taking extra precautions to stay safe.
Man dies after deputies stop him at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man died Thursday after a security breach at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, authorities said. Two Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies suffered minor injuries while stopping the man from running to the flights’ gates. BSO deputies said the man suffered a “medical episode" and paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. On Thursday afternoon, detectives were still inside and outside the airport’s Terminal 3. The incident remains under investigation.
South Florida airports put on best face for Super Bowl LIV fans
MIAMI – To impress Super Bowl LIV fans, airport officials in South Florida are doing what they can to make sure the airports are clean, well decorated and feel welcoming before the game. Miami International Airport in Miami-Dade County will be playing welcoming messages from Miami Dolphins’ legends Dan Marino, Nat Moore and Jason Taylor. Transportation Security Administration is preparing for a record-departure day with additional checkpoints and more trained dogs. Authorities are asking Super Bowl LIV fans to pack their commemorative programs in carry-on bags and plan to go through security two hours before departure. The FAA has placed special air traffic procedures in place at MIA, FLL, Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, Miami-Opa Locka Airport, Miami Executive Airport, Boca Raton Airport, Palm Beach International Airport, Pompano Beach Airpark and North Perry Airport.
